Physician Assistant Per Diem Surgical PA NP Services

Position Summary

NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island is a 591‑bed university‑affiliated medical center that offers diagnostic and therapeutic care across many specialties. We are seeking a Physician Assistant for Per Diem Surgical PA & NP Services to provide comprehensive medical care, coordinate efforts, and support patients in inpatient or outpatient settings.

Job Responsibilities

• Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the institution, department and clinical service.
• Educates patients and families to facilitate healthy adjustment to new or changed health patterns.
• Evaluates treatment and health‑care plans for effectiveness and modifies them per clinical standards and practice protocols.
• Performs delegated clinical duties effectively and efficiently.
• Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the Medical Staff rules and bylaws.
• Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per protocol.
• Prescribes in‑patient and discharge medications, including controlled substances under New York State law.
• Maintains physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity necessary for duties. Membership in professional specialty organizations is desirable.
• Facilitates group processes and works collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, communication, problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
• Prior experience as a physician assistant or fellowship experience is preferred.
• At least 2 years of clinical rotation in multiple medical, surgical and other specialty areas.
• Coordinates implementation of clinical research studies or trials, including patient screening, enrollment and data collection.
• Monitors and trends cost effectiveness related to service efficiency and performance indicators.
• Assists in preparation, implementation and evaluation of research protocols.
• Collaborates with nursing and other disciplines to develop and implement clinical studies within the area of expertise.
• Uses evidence‑based literature to advise and support appropriate practice changes.
• Participates in development and monitoring of patient outcomes for quality improvement.
• Serves as a clinical expert and resource for education of peers and other health professionals.
• Maintains PA board certification and annual CME requirements for re‑appointment and privileging.
• Maintains current expertise in area of practice and promotes professional growth.
• Functions as a respectful member of the health‑care team.
• Participates in activities related to PA practice standards.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s Core Values and incorporates them into duties.
• Facilitates patient throughput and efficient processes during admission and discharge.
• Ensures continuity of care across the continuum of services (home care, other facilities, appointments with MDs, etc.).
• Provides consultation on therapeutic regimens to nursing staff responsible for patient care.
• Communicates with family members, house staff, other disciplines and ancillary services in collaboration with attending physicians.
• Develops and revises interdisciplinary and hospital standards, patient and family education materials as relevant.
• Develops and implements therapeutic plans of care for a group of patients and ensures communication with family members.
• Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and ensure appropriate resource utilization per protocols and pathways.
• Additional duties for physicians assigned to the Helen L. & Martin S. Kimmel Hyperbaric and Advanced Wound Healing Center, as outlined in the Role of the Physician Assistant policy for the Hyperbaric Center.

Minimum Qualifications

• Physician Assistant Bachelor's Degree (BA‑PA).
• Current New York State Physician Assistant License.
• NCCPA Board Certification.
• Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics.
• Membership in pertinent professional organizations.
