Your Role on the Team
Under general supervision, guided by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP), and in collaboration with the Department of Neurology faculty, the incumbent provides direct care through physical assessment and medical intervention to patients in the Neurocritical Care Center (NCC). The PA will perform neurological and general physical examinations, manage care related to IRB biomedical protocols, collaborate with research staff, and support teaching activities with fellows, residents, and students.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge and expertise in neurocritical care, including both neurology and critical care principles.
- Diplomatic and flexible communication skills when interacting with doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, and emergency or law enforcement officers.
- Clear communication of medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and on the telephone.
- Advanced knowledge of medical history-taking processes and diagnostic test indications according to written protocols.
- Skill in performing diagnostic tests and invasive procedures such as central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, and lumbar punctures, with understanding of indications, complications, and monitoring.
- Skill in reading medical instruments, editing data, correcting treatment modalities, and operating specialized medical equipment (e.g., intracranial pressure monitors, neuroelectrophysiological machines, pulmonary ventilators).
- Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
- Two or more years of neurocritical care or related experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board.
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) before employment start date, meeting Medicare billing requirements.
- Current DEA registration with schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4 and 5 and state‑issued prescribing authority (if applicable).
- National board certification by the NCCPA at the time of initial appointment.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification from an AHA‑approved course.
Experience
- Experience in the ICU, preferably with Neurology and Neurosurgical patients.
Preferred
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the health system.
Special Conditions
- Initial applicant must provide documentation of provision of care (case type and number) during the past 24 months, representative of scope and complexity of requested privileges.
- Applicants must meet the legal requirements to practice as a PA in California.
- Ability to provide teaching/education activities to a broad range of people, including fellows, residents, medical students, and community members.
