Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner – Critical Care APP Medical Stepdown Unit – Full Time. In this role, the successful candidate will provide high‑acuity inpatient care for adult patients admitted to the Medical Stepdown Unit, working under the supervision of a licensed physician and collaborating with critical care medicine, hospital medicine, pulmonary/critical care, and consulting specialists.

The Physician Assistant Service is dedicated to providing quality, professional, cost‑effective health care to all patients at NYU Langone Hospital‑Suffolk. Physician assistants practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, fulfilling a broad range of medical services that would otherwise be provided by the physician. The PA is permitted to provide any service within his/her scope of training or skills delegated by the supervising physician or the patient’s physician that has been approved by the Credentials Committee and is within the scope of practice of the physician. PAs provide care for in‑ and outpatients primarily in‑house including the Emergency Department, Pre‑Admission Testing, the operating room, Employee Health, and Psych Care, including pediatrics.

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides high-acuity inpatient care for adult patients admitted to the Medical Stepdown Unit. Working in collaboration with Critical Care Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Pulmonary/Critical Care, and consulting specialists, the APP manages patients with complex medical conditions requiring continuous monitoring, advanced therapies, and frequent clinical reassessment. The APP functions with a high degree of autonomy in evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and stabilizing patients at risk for clinical deterioration while promoting safe transitions of care and preventing ICU readmissions.

The Medical Stepdown Unit serves as an intermediate level of care between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and general medical‑surgical units, caring for patients with complex critical care needs who require enhanced monitoring and intervention.

Job Responsibilities

• Introduce/identify self as a physician assistant
• Perform initial assessment, history, and physical examination
• Order and interpret tests/results (lab, radiology, EKG, etc.) based on patient need
• Document care in the chart in accordance with Hospital policy & procedure
• Formulate diagnoses
• Formulate and implement treatment plan
• Consult with physician when required based on patient's condition
• Reassess patients
• Order, apply, remove, reapplies restraints
• Provide emergency medical care including Code 64 management
• Triage patients – ED only
• Perform trauma assessment/reassessment (Trauma Team only)
• Legibly document in patient chart, departmental forms, and any other Hospital forms all pertinent patient information following departmental and Hospital policies
• Document any patient or family education on the Hospital patient and family education form
• All orders and entries dated and timed
• Level of documentation matches severity of situation
• Results of tests ordered documented
• Procedure notes completed
• Follow‑up/consultation with physician documented
• Verbal/telephone orders signed, dated, and timed by end of shift
• Billing forms completed fully and submitted – house only
• Discharge instructions written and given – ED only
• Explain procedure to patient/family
• Use sterile technique
• Perform procedures following accepted standards of care – IVs, Foley catheter, NGT, CVL removal, etc.
• Suturing technique, suture selection, etc.
• Splinting technique – ED only
• Assist in surgery – technique – OR credentialled only
• Perform CT/MRI injections
• Demonstrate positive Service Excellence / customer satisfaction, positive attitude towards change, effective time management, positive communication skills, ability to constructively give and accept feedback, and solid problem‑solving skills
• Demonstrate the medical, technical, and personal skills to assess, reassess, & manage patients
• Know one's limitations and seek help if needed
• Demonstrate the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail
• Work as team member in multidisciplinary manner
• Maintain knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like. Assist in inter‑ and intra‑departmental instruction
• Abide by all federal and state laws, rules, and regulations
• Answer pages immediately (unless busy) using name and title – house only
• Participate in performance assessment and improvement studies

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant or its predecessor
• Current NCCPA certification
• Current New York State license as Registered Physician Assistant
• Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
• Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
• Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP or AGACNP) certification strongly preferred

Required Licenses

• Basic Life Support Cert

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics may be required based on your selected privileges
• Advanced knowledge of critical care physiology and pathophysiology
• Expertise in management of respiratory, cardiovascular, infectious, and metabolic emergencies
• Strong procedural and bedside ultrasound skills
• Ability to independently assess and manage high-acuity patients
• Expertise in ventilatory support and hemodynamic monitoring
• Excellent interdisciplinary communication and leadership skills
• Ability to function effectively in high‑stress clinical environments

The salary range for the role is $138,710.13 - $152,318.13 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
