Physician Assistant (Inpatient) - Otolaryngology

Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced Physician Assistant primed for challenges and innovations to join our growing ENT team here at WashU. This position covers our inpatient floor at Barnes Jewish Hospital working alongside experts in the field of Otolaryngology and Head‑Neck Surgery. As an inpatient Physician Assistant, you will support our patient population during their entire hospital stay, most of whom have undergone extensive oncologic surgical procedures. You will interact closely with our inpatient care team, which includes attending physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, speech‑language pathologists, dieticians, and social workers. The Physician Assistant provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician under supervision, conducting physicals, providing treatment, counseling patients, and, in some instances, prescribing medication.

Scheduled Hours

40 hours per week.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs physical assessments and examinations.
• Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
• Monitors patient adherence to protocols.
• Coordinates screening for research studies.
• Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
• Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
• Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
• Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
• Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
• Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as X‑ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
• Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and infection management.
• Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in‑service meetings, and workshops.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

• Typical physical effort: sitting at desk or table, standing or walking, bending, crouching, stooping, occasional lifting (25 lbs or less)

Education & Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies (Required)
• Current PA licensure to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois, or ability to obtain within three months of hire
• Basic Life Support certification (standard BLS, not online BLS only)
• Additional certifications may be required based on area of specialty

Salary Range

$93,300.00 – $167,800.00 per year (base salary). Salaries within this range are determined by qualifications, performance, and market factors.
