Job Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) – Inpatient Medicine is a licensed, certified, non‑physician healthcare provider who renders direct patient care and has delegated prescriptive authority. They are credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The PA delivers medical care based on the supervising physician’s scope of practice, typically in hospitals, managing patients through rounding, admissions and discharges.

Essential Functions

• Assess the physical and mental condition of patients through comprehensive or problem‑focused physical examinations and medical histories.
• Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and healthcare needs.
• Prescribe or recommend medical drug therapies or related treatments; perform procedures following approved protocols with attention to efficacy, safety, and cost.
• Formulate and implement comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence‑based medicine, and standards of care; collaborate with physicians and team members when appropriate; evaluate patient responses to care.
• Counsel patients and families about medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion; advise on drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with food supplements, over‑the‑counter medications, and herbal remedies.
• Maintain appropriate records detailing patients’ treatment plans and outcomes; initiate timely consultation and referral when scope of practice is exceeded.
• Provide consultation‑level services for conditions related to the PA’s specialty and training.
• Perform invasive procedures specific to scope of practice as delegated by the supervising physician.
• May conduct hospital rounds, assist with admissions and discharges, and provide on‑call support.

• Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Texas.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA).

• Education: Graduate of an accredited program.
• Experience: Less than 1 year of experience.
• Certification/License/Registration: Current license to practice as a PA in Texas; BLS and ACLS as specified; current NCCPA certification.
