Physician (Anesthesiologist-Cardiac)

Summary

The Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is looking for an Anesthesiologist that will function as an attending Anesthesiologist for Cardiac General Anesthesia. TVHS is a large-vibrant- academic VA practice and many of us are associated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This will be a joint appointment with Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with the primary responsibility at TVHS.

Qualifications

• Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • License: Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA). Alternatively, one year of post-medical school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license, or non-US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States meeting fellowship requirements.
  • Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, as non-independent practitioners, with a defined scope of practice under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred Experience
  • Completion of an Anesthesiology residency.
  • ABA accredited fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the National Board of Echocardiography.

  • Prolonged standing and/or sitting for greater than 4 hours.
  • Lifting of 30 pounds or more.
  • Repetitive stooping, bending, squatting, and carrying items from one area to another.

Responsibilities

• Administration of general anesthesia (inhalation and intravenous) including invasive monitoring.
• Administration of regional anesthesia including spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks.
• Placement of venous catheters, arterial catheters, and interpretation of arterial pressures and waveforms.
• Placement of pulmonary artery catheters and interpretation of pressures and waveforms.
• Airway management including cricothyroidotomy.
• Management of ventilator-dependent patients and use of lung ventilation.
• Assessing, consulting, and preparing patients for anesthesia.
• Managing patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery procedures, including open heart surgery on and off pump; valve replacement; laser lead removal; ventricular assist device and intra-aortic balloon pump procedures.
• Assisting with the creation of policies and standard operating procedures for safe operations of the operating room.
• Work schedule: Monday-Friday; hours based on needs of the service.
