nEducation
n• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution (Doctor of Physical Therapy preferred).
n• Successful completion of an approved clinical internship or residency program.
nLicensure & Certification
n• Current and unrestricted Physical Therapist license in the State of New York.
n• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
n• Additional certifications in neurorehabilitation, behavioral health, or geriatric care are preferred.
nExperience
n• Minimum of 2–5 years of clinical experience as a Physical Therapist.
n• Prior experience in a psychiatric, behavioral health, or inpatient rehabilitation setting strongly preferred.
n• Experience working with patients with complex comorbidities, including:
no Severe mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression)
no Cognitive impairments
no Substance use disorders
no Neurological and physical disabilities
n• Experience in interdisciplinary team-based care required.
nClinical Skills & Competencies
n• Strong ability to perform comprehensive physical therapy evaluations, including:
no Functional mobility assessments
no Gait and balance analysis
no Fall risk evaluation
no Musculoskeletal and neuromotor assessments
n• Skilled in developing and implementing individualized treatment plans in a psychiatric setting.
n• Ability to adapt physical therapy interventions for patients with:
no Fluctuating mental status
no Behavioral challenges
no Limited insight or engagement
n• Competence in:
no Therapeutic exercise and conditioning
no Functional training (ADLs, transfers, ambulation)
no Fall prevention and safety training
no Pain management strategies
n• Knowledge of psychopharmacology effects on physical function (e.g., sedation, extrapyramidal symptoms).
n• Familiarity with trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
nPatient Population Expertise
n• Ability to work with:
no Acute and chronic psychiatric inpatients
no Geriatric psychiatry patients
no Patients with co-occurring medical conditions
n• Understanding of how psychiatric conditions impact:

n• Works closely with psychiatry, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, social work, and recreational therapy.
n• Participates actively in treatment planning meetings, discharge planning, and care coordination.
