This Phlebotomist role focuses on safely collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting efficient laboratory workflows. You will perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and documentation, and assist with troubleshooting and workflow improvements in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities

Perform blood draws and other specimen collections, including urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures.

Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

Demonstrate and use appropriate techniques for specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.

Collect, label, and store specimens following established protocols to maintain specimen integrity.

Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.

Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.

Package specimens for transport, following specific procedures to maintain proper temperature and integrity during transit.

Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes.

Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.

Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.

Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.

Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain up-to-date records.

Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries.

Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.

Attend and complete annual department trainings and stay current with procedural updates and regulatory requirements.
Essential Skills

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.

Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

High school diploma or GED with 2–4 years of overall experience.

Demonstrated proficiency in performing venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.

Experience with labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.

Ability to match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify accuracy of orders.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.

Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and data entry.

Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and respond to inquiries.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience working in a diagnostics laboratory environment, including blood draw and sample collection.

Background as a medical lab support professional, lab assistant, or similar laboratory support role.

Familiarity with updating patient information and handling laboratory information systems.

Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced patient service or clinical setting.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously.

Comfort with answering telephones and reading laboratory results to support patient and provider inquiries.
Work Environment
This position is based in a patient service center environment that supports a high volume of specimen collections. You will work in a fast-paced clinical setting with frequent patient interaction and close collaboration with laboratory staff. The role involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen tubes, and related laboratory supplies. You will handle biological specimens and follow strict safety, decontamination, and regulatory protocols. Work may require standing for extended periods, moving between patient areas and specimen processing stations, and maintaining a professional appearance appropriate for a clinical setting.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
