Phlebotomist

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. The position involves hands-on specimen handling, accurate data entry, and clear communication with patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced environment. The phlebotomist assists with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements to help maintain efficient and safe operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and venipunctures using straight and butterfly needles on a diverse patient population, including pediatric through geriatric patients.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, to patients.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper handling and adherence to test requirements.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure complete accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and prepare specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and accurately label all specimens.
  • Update patient information and perform data entry tasks accurately within laboratory and related systems.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
  • Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Strong skills in specimen handling, labeling, sample preparation, and specimen storage.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify test orders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy certification is not required but relevant training or coursework in phlebotomy or medical assisting is beneficial.
  • Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or other biological sample management environments.
  • Knowledge of specimen management protocols, including transport procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Familiarity with pediatric phlebotomy techniques and age-appropriate communication with children and families.
  • Experience using Cerner or similar electronic health record or laboratory information systems.
  • Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices.

Work Environment

This role is based across multiple clinical locations, including a float assignment in the Fort Wayne area and a stationary position at a Wabash facility. The work takes place in a fast-paced clinical and laboratory setting that involves regular patient interaction and frequent specimen collection and processing. The phlebotomist works with equipment such as centrifuges and standard laboratory tools, and uses computer systems including Microsoft Office and potentially Cerner or similar platforms for data entry and results reporting. Mileage and drive time may be compensated when traveling between locations, reflecting the need for flexibility and reliability in covering assigned sites. The environment emphasizes adherence to safety regulations and proper specimen handling protocols to ensure accurate and reliable laboratory results.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $26.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
