Job Summary

The PET/CT Technologist II (PET Tech) reports directly to the Radiology Team Lead. The PET Tech accurately interprets physician orders, administers radiopharmaceuticals (RPH) and/or contrast materials, and prepares and operates PET/CT Scan equipment to ensure proper images are obtained. The role includes acquiring quality diagnostic PET/CT images in accordance with written prescriptions and standard operating procedures, while ensuring safety in patient care through the consistent practice of ALARA principles and accepted standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify the correct patient, escort patients to the scan room, assist patients onto the scanner table, and position patients for image acquisition.
• Acquire diagnostically acceptable images and assist patients in exiting the scan room.
• Provide and ensure an environment of caring, concern, and support for patients, visitors, medical staff, and co-workers.
• Document treatment records completely and accurately, recognizing and documenting required deviations from prescribed scans and reporting all deviations to the Radiology Team Lead and/or interpreting Radiologist.
• Use effective communication techniques to adequately explain the PET/CT scan procedure and its associated risks to patients and their families, referring medical questions to appropriate personnel.
• Observe patients for expected and unexpected reactions to radiopharmaceutical and/or contrast injections and communicate these to appropriate staff members.
• Document all aspects of the image acquisition process within the patient’s record in the Practice EMR.
• Assist with all image acquisition related procedures, including transporting patients, reviewing charts, and ordering supplies.
• Recognize standard imaging artifacts and make necessary adjustments to ensure high quality scans.
• Perform and document daily and weekly QA checklists for all PET/CT related equipment, including the Hotlab, notifying appropriate clinical team members of findings outside the normal range of operations.
• Participate in programs to measure and improve the quality of care within the Department, using critical thinking to troubleshoot and often fix common quality issues.
• Capture and verify patient procedures performed and assist with the submission of Superbill charges.

Qualifications

• Education: Minimum – Graduate from an accredited School of Nuclear Medicine Technology or similar. Preferred – BS Degree in Nuclear Medicine or related field.
• Certification: Certified as a Registered Nuclear Medicine or PET Technologist by the NMTCB or ARRT; dual certification as a Radiographer (ARRT) or CT Technologist (CT) is preferred.
• State license required if applicable for locality.
• Must have current CPR/BLS certifications.
• Fluency in English is essential; ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.
• Minimum of three (3) years active experience as a PET/CT Technologist.
• Maintain an active Nuclear Medicine or PET certification (NMTCB or ARRT) and state license as required.
• Maintain CE Education Units to meet certifying and state requirements.

Key Performance Areas

• Inject RPH and contrast materials in accordance with SOP and standards of care.
• Utilize PET/CT scanner to produce cross-section images for diagnosis.
• Maintain and perform Quality Control tests on PET/CT scanner and hot lab equipment.
• Ensure accurate scanning of each patient by using proper protocols.
• Identify appropriate patients using the 2-method protocol.
• Explain test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provide assistance during test procedures.
• Prepare RPH and contrast adhering to safety standards.
• Produce a computer-generated or film image for interpretation by a physician.
• Coordinate and maintain patient schedules with company coordinators.
• Maintain compliance with all federal and state laws, regulations, and company policies including IT and Disaster Recovery Plan.
• Keep work area and records neat and orderly.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
• Assist in training new employees related to job duties.
• Provide technical guidance to PET/CT Technologist I in absence of Radiology Team Lead.
