Role Overview: The Perfusionist supports cardiac surgeries by operating and maintaining cardiopulmonary bypass and circulatory support equipment. They collaborate closely with physicians, ensuring optimal patient care during procedures involving cardiopulmonary support systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and assemble perfusion equipment, including bypass systems and ancillary devices.
- Monitor and maintain perfusion equipment, ensuring proper functioning and timely cleaning.
- Manage cardiopulmonary support during surgeries, reacting to changing patient conditions and assisting with medication, blood products, and gases.
- Document procedures accurately and adhere to safety and quality standards.
- Operate advanced devices such as ECMO, ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and blood gas analyzers.
- Communicate effectively with medical staff, providing clear data interpretation and support.
- Travel and respond to on-call demands, including ECMO transport and coverage across multiple facilities.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited perfusion program.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and surgical procedures.
- Ability to work in a team, handle stressful situations, and communicate professionally.
- Licenses: Georgia Clinical Perfusionist license and BLS certification; American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certification required within 12 months if a new graduate.
Additional Requirements: Maintain equipment, supplies, and safety protocols; perform other duties as assigned; comply with organizational policies and standards.
