Variable (United States of America) Perfusionist The Perfusionist is a skilled professional, qualified by academic and clinical education, who provides functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. This professional operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Prepares and administers blood products and prescription solutions through bypass circuitry. Regularly participates in the on call schedule.

  • Bachelors of Science in Perfusion, other Bachelor's Degree or Master’s Degree required.
  • Experience as a Perfusionist, in a student capacity or independent practioner with a minimum of 3 letters of reference from cardiovascular surgeons, cardiovascular anesthesiologists, previous supervisor or academic references.
  • Must be able to operate the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function.
  • A Perfusionist is responsible for the selection of appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, analysis, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.
  • A Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) validates his/her mastery of these clinical skills, knowledge, and abilities through certification and meets ongoing continuing education and practice requirements through recertification.
  • The American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) is the certifying body for Certified Clinical Perfusionists (CCPs).
