Department Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicineat Virginia Commonwealth University along with the Division ofPediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery is seeking a talentedMD/DO board-certified (or equivalent) pediatric cardiacanesthesiologist, to lead the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology teamat VCU.

Our Pediatric Anesthesia group is comprised of 10 faculty withsupport from CRNAs. Three of our existing faculty members areexperienced in cardiac and can serve as backup for this role. Thepediatric anesthesiologist dually report to the chair of Anesthesiaand the Surgeon in Chief for the Children’s Hospital. Our pediatricanesthesiologists are committed to taking care of Children 100%ofthe time.

Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will be based in Richmond and offers the uniqueopportunity to participate in clinical practice, academicendeavors, as well as fellow, resident, and medical studenteducation. Experience in the full spectrum of congenital heartdisease is expected, including complex neonates, adult congenitalheart disease, mechanical cardiac support, and hearttransplantation. This individual will be responsible forcoordinating anesthesia care on all patients with congenital heartdisease, including but not limited to, the operating room, thecardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, andnon-invasive laboratory for sedated echocardiographic andcardioversion procedures.

The Pediatric Cardiology Division is growing and is now comprisedof 10 Physicians, 3 Nurse Practioners and has an active, vibrantfellowship led by their Chief, Dr. Christopher Snyder. ThePediatric Cardiac Surgery Division is excited to announce thearrival of Dr. Brian Kogon as the new Chief of Congenital CardiacSurgery. Dr. Kogon is an expert in the care of Children and Adultswith Congenital Cardiac Disease and comes with over 20 years ofexperience. All aspects of pediatric cardiac care are currentlylocated within the VCU Health System including congenital surgery,diagnostic and interventional catheterization, fetal,

electrophysiology and basic science. Services have transitioned tothe new inpatient children’s tower, which includes astate-of-the-art hybrid cardiac procedure suite (cardiaccatheterization, electrophysiology lab, and operating room).

Drs. Kogon and Snyder, are working in collaboration with theircounterparts, Drs. Tom L’Ecuyer and Jay Gangemi, from theUniversity of Virginia Children’s Hospital to establish a uniquemodel of care for Children and Families in Virginia. The motto ofthe collaborative, Virginia Congenital Cardiac Collaborative (VC3),is “two campuses, one program”. The mission of this collaborationis to provide patient care at the highest level of quality andsafety, expand research, and education in the patients localcommunity. The goals of the collaborative are fully supported byboth institutions (VCU and UVA) and leadership of both Children’sHospitals.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree
  • ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Eligible for employment in the United States
  • Good communication, clinical and teaching skills
  • The ideal candidate will have formal training in PediatricCardiac anesthesiology, or will have considerable experience inPediatric Cardiac anesthesiology
  • The ability to work collegially within a multidisciplinarysystem is essential
  • The role of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist will be tolead the day-to day Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology operations, aswell as to be engaged in Quality and Safety Initiatives, CommunityOutreach, and interdepartmental proceedings
