The Staff Speech Language Pathologist, Speech Pathologist II, reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Speech Language Pathology and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Staff Speech Language Pathologist II works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the Staff Speech Language Pathologist II plans and administers a full range of speech therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Patient Care Responsibilities (75%)
    • Perform speech‑language pathology evaluations and administer tests to determine functional limitations.
    • Establish short‑ and long‑term therapeutic intervention goals in consultation with the referring practitioner.
    • Develop and adjust intervention plans based on progress.
    • Administer direct patient care using the full range of techniques outlined in the Series Concept.
    • Delegate and supervise therapeutic interventions that can be legally and appropriately performed by support staff.
    • Complete discharge planning as appropriate.
    • Maintain accurate patient care records, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third‑party payer reports (e.g. CCS, MediCare, Medi‑Cal forms).
    • Communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel.
    • Report on patients’ progress at rounds, clinics and conferences as indicated.
    • Demonstrate effective time‑management skills.
  • Educational Responsibilities (15%)
    • Participate in staff in‑service education programs and meetings.
    • Assist with orientation and training of new staff.
    • Provide community outreach and programs to other hospital departments.
    • Instruct speech‑language pathology interns, fellowship candidates and other health‑care students (e.g. nursing, medical, pre‑speech‑language pathology).
    • Pursue opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.
  • Departmental Responsibilities (10%)
    • Participate in department quality assurance and performance‑improvement activities.
    • Contribute to departmental goals through special projects, committees, etc.
    • Represent the department professionally.
  • Other Functions and Responsibilities
    • Perform any additional duties related to patient care activities as required.
    • Perform duties assigned by the Assistant Director and/or the Director of Rehabilitative Services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 12 months experience as a licensed therapist.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.
  • Good interpersonal, time‑management, problem‑solving and self‑initiation skills.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior speech‑language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
  • Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATION

  • Licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech‑Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
