Overview

Inova Laboratories, located in Northern Virginia, is seeking an experienced pathologist with board certification in clinical pathology to join the clinical pathology service of this large and expanding system laboratory. Fellowship training in Pediatric Pathology is required and 3–5 years of experience is preferred. Candidates must be certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or equivalent and be eligible for certification in Pediatric Pathology or have equivalent training/experience. Candidates must also be eligible for medical licensure in Virginia. The preferred applicant should have experience in providing clinical pathology services and is expected to sign out clinical pathology and surgical/hematopathology (as appropriate) cases for both adult and pediatric populations.

The position will be actively involved in clinical issues such as consultation for clinician inquiries, quality management, operational efficiency including utilization management and outreach, and collaboration with the laboratory Medical Director, administration and technical personnel to ensure world-class diagnostic services. The ability to lead a highly proficient team and strong interpersonal skills are desirable.

Pathologist Job Responsibilities

  • As a Clinical Pathologist, assist with laboratory regulatory compliance, validations, process improvements, and quality initiatives, and participate in intra- and extradepartmental committees as a section medical director.
  • Demonstrate strong diagnostic and communication skills with the ability to handle clinical and surgical pathology sign-out of active cases (including peripheral smears, electrophoresis, body fluids, etc.) and oversee daily clinical laboratory duties such as apheresis, blood bank, hematology, and chemistry.
  • Participate in centralized slide distribution and share cases across the system to enable subspecialty sign-out within the pathologist’s preferred subspecialties (e.g., hematopathology).
  • On-call duties include blood bank calls, apheresis, and other consults from the clinical laboratory.
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Medical Doctorate Program (MD/DO).

Requirements

  • Board Certification: Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP).
  • Fellowship training: Pediatrics.
  • Certification: Must obtain advanced certification in the applicable modality within one year of training; Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Licensure: Unrestricted Virginia medical licensure or the ability to obtain one.
  • Credentialing: Ability to obtain successful medical staff credentials throughout all Inova pathology locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of previous experience in pediatrics.
