Major Responsibilities
- Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients, such as changes in skin condition, vital signs, and mental status.
- Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, employing interventions to de‑escalate patients and using restraints in accordance with training and education as directed.
- Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals, and nourishment.
- Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
- Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall‑prevention devices/strategies, and following the Restraint Policy standards.
- Records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oxymetry) and measures patients’ height and weight.
- Performs EKGs, point‑of‑care tests, and bladder scans according to hospital standards; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for lab transport.
- Performs phlebotomy in certain locations.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs, building positive rapport and relationships.
- Performs unit‑specific procedures such as telemetry battery changes, equipment status checks, and equipment cleaning/storage.
- Assists RNs or Licensed Independent Practitioners with treatments and procedures, preparing equipment/supplies, performing sterile technique when indicated, and providing emotional support to patients.
- Observes, records oral food and fluid intake, sets up fully‑strength tube‑feeding solutions, refills feeding bags, and records outputs from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems; performs ostomy care as directed.
- Answers phones with appropriate etiquette, relays messages, and utilizes intra‑department communication systems such as pagers and intercom.
- Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment.
- Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and UMMHC e‑mails regularly.
Unit Secretary
Functions as unit secretary assisting with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures at least 5 shifts (40 hours) every 6 months. Holds administrative responsibilities including maintaining logs, organizing admission/discharge/transfer charts, and maintaining medical records. Enters data and retrieves medical information from the electronic medical record systems.
Remote Video Monitoring
Continuously observes multiple patients utilizing the remote video monitoring system in the Emergency Department, Step‑Down Unit, ICU, Dialysis, and Hospital at Home.
Telemetry Certified & Step‑Down Unit – Harrington
PCT III personnel are cross‑trained in phlebotomy and telemetry competencies and may also perform the unit clerk position. PCT III staff will be assigned to higher acuity areas such as the Step‑Down Unit.

Position Qualifications
License/Certification/Education
- Minimum of a high school education or GED.
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
Experience & Skills
- Demonstrated competency attainment at the PCT II level.
- Prior inpatient/outpatient care experience or clinical care training.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
- Medical terminology knowledge.
- Computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and provide exceptional service to patients.
- Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations and ability to seek assistance when more direction is needed.
- Ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
Position requires indoor work in a patient‑care environment. Requires hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to take direction, adjust equipment, and observe patient conditions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is heavily demanding, with prolonged standing, walking, pushing heavy equipment, and bending frequently.
