Job Description

Safely transports patients to and from the department according to departmental protocols.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Recognizes and assumes responsibility for reporting patient care or safety concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Initiates a friendly but respectful relationship with patients and demonstrates responsiveness to patient’s physical, psychological and social needs.
  • Makes judgments regarding patient care and operational flow based on established policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborates and effectively communicates with physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of any delays that may affect operational workflow.
  • When required, transports deceased patients to the morgue.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of working area, stretchers, wheelchairs, IV poles and other items used in patient transportation.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0–1 year(s) related work experience.
  • Basic familiarity with computers and ability to navigate basic web‑based applications.

  • Decision Making – ability to make decisions based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures with little or no supervision.
  • Problem Solving – ability to address routine problems following clear directions and procedures and identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Independence of Action – ability to follow general instructions and procedures while work is monitored by a supervisor or manager.

Communications

Written Communications: Ability to read, write and understand basic safety instructions and communicate effectively with patients, families and staff.

Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English to follow basic safety instructions and communicate effectively with patients, families and staff in routine situations.

Other Requirements

Knowledge: Basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations.

Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with others, offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.

Customer Service: Demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Age‑Based Competencies: Provide care to patients in the following age groups: Young adult (16–30 years), Middle age (30–60 years) and Elderly (60 years and older).

Physical Nature of the Job: Very heavy work – may require exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally or 50 pounds of force continually. Physical activity required in all elements of the job.

Additional Information

Vaccination against influenza is required for all staff as a condition of employment.
