Pathologist AssistantThe Pathologist Assistant will provide anatomic pathology services under the clinical direction and supervision of a pathologist.
Responsibilities will primarily include gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and special procedures including tumor triage.•Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department/service.•Preparation of gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens including:Ensures specimens are accessioned appropriately and that patient identification is maintained throughout the process.Obtains appropriate clinical history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory and data and able to coordinate with pathological findings.Accurately describes and dictates the overall specimen dimensions, structures, size, appearance and relationship of disease present to pertinent anatomic structures and margins using appropriate terminology.Exercises judgement by preserving samples for testing analysis (flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, etc.)Ensures proper triaging and prioritizing of all pathology specimensPhotographing all pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slidesPerforming duties relating to maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data, including the filing of reports, protocols, photographic and microscopic slides, assuring the completion of specimen coding and billingAssuring proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite•Selecting, preparing and submitting appropriate gross tissue sections for frozen section analysis as well as light and immunofluorescent microscopyCompletes frozen section processes following policies and procedures, and turnaround time as defined by College of American PathologistsParticipates in intraoperative consultationsPerforming duties related to the maintenance of anatomic pathology protocols, photographic and microscopic slides, and assuring the completion of coding.Assisting in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences.Orients and trains other laboratory technicians in the preparation and analysis of specimens and may direct their work as it relates to these activities.May participate in general administration activities within the laboratory to include development of protocols, policies/procedures and providing input into the annual budgeting process.Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.Completes continuing education and submits appropriate documentation where applicablePerforms other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic's mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.•Education •4 Year / Bachelors Degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program•Experience •Prior experience as a Pathologist Assistant preferred•Certifications and Licenses •ASCP Certification to be obtained within 90 days of hire• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information
