POSITION INFORMATION

Position Type: Support Staff/Ratio Paraprofessional

Position: Part-Time K–6 Ratio Paraprofessional

Grade Levels: Kindergarten–6th Grade

Location: Penrose Elementary School

Reports To: Building Principal or designee; works under the direction of licensed teachers

Employment Status: Part-Time / Classified / Non-Exempt

Work Calendar: 150 days

Work Schedule: 4 hours per day, 4-day school week

Assignment: Ratio-based classroom support; classroom or grade-level assignment may vary based on enrollment, staffing needs, and the applicable Master Agreement

Salary: Based on the Fremont RE-2 Classified Salary Schedule and applicable verified experience

POSITION OVERVIEW

Fremont RE-2 School District is seeking a dependable, collaborative, and student-centered K–6 Ratio Paraprofessional to provide classroom and instructional support based on student enrollment and established student-teacher ratios.

Under the direction of licensed teachers and building administration, the Ratio Paraprofessional assists with instruction, classroom activities, small-group support, student supervision, and other educational needs that contribute to a safe, positive, and effective learning environment.

The position may support one or more K–6 classrooms, teachers, or grade levels based on enrollment, staffing, and building needs.

RATIO-BASED ASSIGNMENT: This position provides classroom support based on K–6 student enrollment and student-teacher ratios established in the applicable Fremont RE-2 Professional Negotiations/Master Agreement.

The amount of paraprofessional support assigned to a classroom may vary by grade level and enrollment. Assignments may be adjusted throughout the school year as enrollment, classroom configuration, staffing, and instructional needs change.

The employee may be assigned to support one or more classrooms, teachers, grade levels, or instructional settings during the workday.

Assignment to a specific classroom, teacher, grade level, or group of students does not guarantee continued placement in that assignment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional and Classroom Support

  • Provide instructional support to individual students, small groups, and classrooms under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Assist students with academic tasks, assignments, classroom activities, and skill development.
  • Reinforce concepts and skills introduced by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist with small-group instruction and learning activities as directed.
  • Support students in developing independence, responsibility, organization, and appropriate learning habits.
  • Assist teachers with preparation, organization, and distribution of instructional materials.
  • Support the appropriate use of educational technology and classroom resources.
  • Collect or record student information and observations as directed by licensed staff.
  • Follow classroom procedures, instructional plans, schedules, and teacher direction.

Student Supervision and Support

  • Provide active and appropriate supervision of students throughout assigned portions of the school day.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, arrival and dismissal areas, assemblies, field trips, and other assigned school settings.
  • Assist students with transitions between classrooms, activities, and other school environments.
  • Reinforce classroom and school expectations for behavior, safety, responsibility, and respect.
  • Use positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate approaches when working with students.
  • Support students with academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, or organizational needs as directed by appropriate staff.
  • Encourage student independence while providing necessary support.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students at all times.

Student Safety

  • Maintain awareness of student location, behavior, and safety while providing supervision.
  • Follow all District, building, and classroom safety procedures.
  • Promptly report student injuries, accidents, behavioral concerns, or other safety issues to appropriate staff.
  • Follow school emergency procedures and appropriately participate in drills and emergency response.
  • Comply with mandatory reporting requirements regarding suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Report concerns involving bullying, harassment, discrimination, threats, inappropriate conduct, or other student-safety concerns through appropriate District channels.
  • Participate in required safety, behavior, de-escalation, or student-specific training when applicable to the assignment.

COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, specialists, and other support staff.
  • Follow directions and instructional guidance provided by licensed staff and building administration.
  • Communicate relevant student observations, progress, concerns, or incidents to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, employees, families, and community members.
  • Refer parent/guardian questions regarding grades, instructional decisions, student placement, discipline, or other matters requiring professional decisions to the appropriate teacher or administrator.
  • Participate in required meetings, training, and professional development.
  • Contribute positively to a school culture focused on teamwork, inclusion, respect, and student success.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student academic, behavioral, health, disciplinary, and family information.
  • Follow FERPA, Board policies, District procedures, and applicable student privacy requirements.
  • Access and discuss student information only as necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships and professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrate patience, professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and sound judgment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Follow Fremont RE-2 Board policies, administrative procedures, the Classified Employee Handbook, and building expectations.
  • Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned by the Building Principal or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or recognized equivalent.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively supervise and support K–6 students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with students with a variety of academic, developmental, behavioral, and individual needs.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Demonstrate patience, dependability, flexibility, and appropriate professional judgment.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Be willing and able to complete required District and student-specific training.
  • Successfully complete required criminal background screening and fingerprinting.
  • Meet any additional federal, state, or District qualification requirements applicable to the specific assignment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Previous experience working with elementary-aged students.
  • Previous experience in a school, child care, educational, or youth-support setting.
  • Experience providing instructional or classroom support.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic or behavioral needs.
  • College coursework related to education, child development, psychology, or a related field.
  • Successful completion of an approved paraprofessional assessment.
