Job Title

This position is responsible for assisting the teacher in achieving objectives by working with the class, small groups or individual students to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.

Duties include:

  • Discussing assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Preparing lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment and demonstrations as needed.
  • Presenting subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
  • Tutoring and assisting children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Supervising students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums or on field trips.
  • Serving as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
  • Distributing teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers and pencils to students.
  • Distributing tests and homework assignments, and collecting them when they are completed.
  • Enforcing administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Grading homework and tests, and computing and recording results, using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.
  • Completing required reports in a timely manner.
  • Teaching socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Working with students with multiple physical, mental and developmental disabilities.
  • Being familiar with and using adaptive equipment including communication equipment, wheelchairs, adaptive feeding tools, etc.
  • Assisting students with self-care, hygiene, and feeding as necessary.
  • Performing tasks that students are not able to do, i.e. taking notes, handling materials, holding books, etc.
  • Working with/handling resistive students.
  • Serving as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintaining a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Assisting the classroom teacher in other tasks necessary in maintaining a professional and positive classroom environment, and performing other teacher aide duties as may be assigned by the classroom teacher, administration or Board of Education.

Qualifications include:

  • Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; completed 60 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; passed the ETS ParaPro assessment; or passed the applicable ACT WorkKeys assessments.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to work with teachers, education support personnel, building administrators, and the general public.
  • Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires employee to have the ability to push/pull up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be detail oriented.

Scheduling:

The work hours for this position are from 7:50 am to 3:15 pm. The schedule is subject to change with district demands. Overtime is required when requested.
