Qualifications & MDE Requirements
Per the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Title I federal standards, candidates must hold a high school diploma/GED AND meet one of the following requirements:
- Associate Degree or Higher: Associate of Arts/Science degree from an accredited institution.
- College Coursework: Minimum of 60 semester hours (or equivalent) of completed higher education credit.
- State Formal Assessment: Passing score (460 or higher) on the ETS ParaPro Assessment, or valid completion of historical state-approved assessments (e.g., WorkKeys).
- Assist individual or small groups of students with reading, writing, mathematics, and classroom tasks under teacher guidance.
- Reinforce positive behavioral supports, IEP accommodations, and classroom rules.
- Help prepare instructional materials and maintain a clean, organized learning environment.
- Provide physical or self-care assistance to students as required by program placement.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and progress.
