This is for the Atlantic County Special Services School District School Year Position Purpose - Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.

Essential Job Functions

  • To assist the teacher in working with individual students and small groups of students or to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • To assist the teacher in data collection for evaluating achievement as specified in the Instructional Guide of the Individualized Education Plan under the direction of the teacher.
  • Under the direction of the teacher, to assist in devising special strategies for reinforcement of materials, skills and classroom management.
  • Under Teacher's direction assist child in addressing IEP goals and objectives.
  • Under Teacher's direction facilitate child's classroom integration and participation in group activities.
  • Maintain daily anecdotal notes of behavior.
  • Record student task performance and progress daily.
  • Implement behavior management plan as directed.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up as assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist in checking notebooks, correcting papers and monitoring testing and make up work as assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, etc.
  • Serve as a source of information and assist the substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Alert the classroom teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected of teachers.
  • Will accompany and assist the monitoring of students in situations other than those existing in the classroom environment (eg: bus duty, lunch room duty, specials) and other related duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications Profile

  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
    • High School diploma or equivalent and or 60 college credits
    • Substitute Certificate preferred
    • Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.

Salary & Benefits: Salaries start at $27,993 depending upon experience and education in accordance with the salary guide. Sick, Personal time and Bereavement time is included along with Benefits.
