Description

The Department of State Police is seeking a Paralegal Specialist to work in the Legal Division and closely with the Public Records Unit and provide direct support for management of the State Police Body Worn Camera (BWC) Program and public records requests.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Support approximately eight (8) attorneys and the General Counsel of the Massachusetts State Police in a variety of matters.

Prepares cases for trial or administrative proceedings by gathering documents, organizing case file documentation and exhibits, and briefing legal counsel on case issues prior to such proceedings.

Retrieve, redact, and provide BWC video footage upon request by the courts, prosecuting agencies, and the public.

Analyzes proposed legislation, prepares reports, and drafts legislation for review and approval by legal counsel.

Respond to inquiries concerning formal interpretation of agency laws, rules and regulations.

Perform related duties such as developing case tracking systems; preparing correspondence; operating office machines; delivering documents and providing additional legal support functions.

Prepares such legal documents as briefs, summaries, and responses to interrogatories by interviewing relevant parties, reviewing and analyzing facts and points of law, and drafting documents for review and approval by legal counsel.

Assist with responds to media records requests, and subpoenas.Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, opinions, determinations and rulings in order to prepare legal digests detailing the points of law involved

Work in a team environment in collecting documents and other materials in response to public record requests sent to the Massachusetts State Police.

Qualifications

Qualifications First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in legal research or legal assistant work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in paralegal studies may be substituted for the required experience.
II. Completion of one year of study at a recognized, degree-granting law school may be substituted for the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
