Summary

BASIC FUNCTION
This position supports student achievement by providing, under the direction of the Director, Special Education, and under the direction and indirect supervision of certificated staff, specialized assistance to instruct pupils individually or in groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives; assisting a teacher or administrator in establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom and site behavior; performance of medical treatments and procedures necessary in providing specialized physical health care in-services to pupils with exception needs; and acting as a paraprofessional assistant to a teacher in performing assigned tasks.
Representative Duties
  1. Under direction of teacher, provides individualized instruction by matching instruction to needs of each pupil;
  2. Assists with supervision of classroom, outdoor playground, and field trip activities to direct pupils into safe activities and relationships;
  3. Works with pupils individually or in small groups to tutor, reinforce, or follow-up learning activities;
  4. Implements assigned sections of pupil behavior management plans, which may involve use of approved behavior modification, physical management techniques or other skills or knowledge to establish and maintain appropriate behavior;
  5. Helps pupils learn normal speech patterns by helping them produce sounds, words, and sentences;
  6. Helps pupils to be self-reliant, relate to individuals and groups who are not handicapped, and to learn how to sequence tasks;
  7. May pick up breakfasts/lunches from a nearby area school lunchroom; prepare lunch trays and, under direction of certificated staff, feeds students unable to feed themselves;
  8. Works cooperatively with others in providing specialized physical health care services and performing standardized procedures in compliance with legal requirements, rules, and regulations.
  9. May participate as a member of the appropriate team or committee to assist staff with developing and implementing individual or site crises management plans;
  10. Accompanies or Assists students to and from school bus or other transportation and in moving to/from activities on school site or campus; rides with pupils on bus which transports pupils to/from school, as appropriate;
  11. Accompanies and assists certificated personnel during the transporting and instruction of student in off-campus or community-based settings;
  12. Gives guidance and provides an example for pupils in various areas such as academic learning, communication, vocational skills, social and leisure skills, physical development and fitness, and personal hygiene;
  13. Confers on a regular basis with teacher in regard to planning and scheduling activities, instructional goals and objectives, pupil progress, and pertinent health or behavior problems;
  14. Assists teacher in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and pleasant classroom and learning environment; assists teacher with implementation of students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP) through instruction in a variety of activities, such as nature study, singing, dancing and sports;
  15. May perform one or more of the following procedures, after receiving appropriate training, as they pertain to the individual student: suctioning, when needed to clear air passages, including care of suction machine and attachments, tracheotomy tube and skin around intuition; tube replacement; gastrostomy tube feeding, including care of gastrostomy tube, equipment and skin around intuition; catheterization and care of supplies and equipment; colostomy, iliostomy care, and care of supplies, adjuncts and equipment; oxygen administration and proper use and care of equipment, including monitoring of flow control oxygen level; emergency care as needed, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts until paramedics or other medical assistance is available;
  16. Administers first aid; with assistance and direction, establish and maintain daily documentation of specialized physical health care services and procedures which may include administration of medication;
  17. Updates and maintains medical records; initiates and completes reports and records, such as accident and incident reports;
  18. Maintains confidentiality of student records in accordance with legal requirements and policies;
  19. Attends in-service and staff meetings as required;
  20. Assists lifting of students in/out of wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment;
  21. Assists staff member in positioning students and in rendering various forms of personal care such as toileting and diapering; assists students in dressing, undressing, bathing, grooming, eating and feeding;
  22. Under the direction of the school administrator and the procedure observed by a certificated staff member, assists students with taking medication;
  23. Performs routine clerical tasks; operates duplicating machines; assembles material for classroom projects; prepares material and masters; answers telephone; may perform incidental typing tasks;
  24. Perform related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year paid experience providing related health care services . Completion of 30 college semester units in nursing or other appropriate health-related field may substitute for six months of the required experience.
Education:
High school diploma or GED; and
Academic proficiency requirements in ONE of the following ways:
  1. Completed two years or more of college units (48+ units); OR
  2. Received an AA degree or higher; OR
  3. Successfully complete our academic proficiency exam which requires knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Possession of valid CPR and First Aid certificate prior to the completion of employee's probationary period.
If you are attempting to satisfy the academic proficiency requirement, official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree awarded or completion of 48+ college units. If official transcripts are not attached to the application, you will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment in addition to the job-specific examination for this position.
Proof of Education
Completed high school or college-level coursework at an institution in a country other than the United States must provide a Foreign Equivalency Certification to satisfy the education requirement for the position. Work Schedule:
This position typically works part-time, 5.75 hours or 6.50 hours per day depending on position availability, and observes the student calendar. Potential for more hours is in accordance with employee seniority standing and position availability.
Examination
The examination component consists of a qualifying multiple-choice exam and structured oral interview exam. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exams and are notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.

Salary The initial salary rate for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate salary schedule for the position. The probationary period is 130 work days (not counting sick, industrial accident). Upon becoming permanent, a one-step salary advance shall be granted with future annual advances up to the fifth step of the salary schedule.
Working Conditions:
Indoor/outdoor environment. Exposure to temperature swings in climate-controlled indoor environments and outdoor environments when walking between buildings or to vehicle and offices; potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids from students; exposure to various noises form classrooms, office equipment/machines, students and employees.

Some sitting, walking and standing for extended periods of time; bending; stooping; pushing, pulling, reaching; lifting or moving students - may use a multi-person lift or use of mechanical lifting equipment; see and hear in normal visual and audio range with or without correction.
