PainterThis role offers the opportunity to work as an experienced commercial and residential painter on a 3–4 month summer assignment focused primarily on projects at a major university in the Bay Area. You will perform a wide range of interior and exterior painting tasks across commercial and multifamily settings in locations such as Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Sunnyvale. The position is ideal for painters who are reliable, detail-oriented, and diligent in their craft, and who are comfortable working on varied projects and sites throughout the assignment.ResponsibilitiesPrepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting by sanding, repairing, and finishing sheetrock and plaster as needed.Apply paint, stains, and varnishes using brushes, rollers, and other appropriate tools to achieve a clean, professional finish.Use hand sanders and other preparation tools to ensure surfaces are properly treated prior to painting.Repair and refinish surfaces including walls, ceilings, and various structural elements in commercial and residential environments.Mix and match paint to achieve accurate colors and finishes according to project specifications.Waterproof designated surfaces to protect structures and finishes from moisture and weather exposure.Refinish furniture such as chairs, bookcases, desks, and other fixtures when required by the project.Set glass and apply putty to windows and other installations as part of finishing work.Paint signs and other specialty surfaces as requested.Occasionally hang wallpaper and complete related finishing tasks.Bring and use personal painting tools and materials, including rollers, brushes, buckets, and a grip bag, to perform daily work.Report to assigned sites in Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, and primarily the university campus, as directed.Follow daily work orders issued in the late afternoon that determine the next day's assignments and locations.Remain comfortable switching locations and projects as needed based on daily dispatch requirements.Adhere to safety guidelines, including wearing appropriate work boots and attire, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.Manage time effectively to complete tasks within the scheduled workday, including packing and bringing lunch to remain on site during breaks.Essential SkillsAt least 3 years of recent commercial painting experience.Strong skills in interior and exterior painting in commercial and multifamily settings.Ability to perform tenant improvement painting work in occupied or semi-occupied spaces.Proficiency in using brushes, rollers, and hand sanders for surface preparation and application.Experience with sheetrock finishing, plaster repair, and general surface restoration.Capability to mix and match paint to achieve required colors and finishes.Knowledge of waterproofing techniques for various surfaces.Ability to refinish furniture and fixtures, including chairs, bookcases, desks, and similar items.Skill in setting glass and applying putty as part of finishing tasks.Comfort with occasionally hanging wallpaper and completing detailed finishing work.Reliable transportation to travel between multiple job sites as needed.Dependable work habits, including punctuality and consistency across changing locations.Ability to work in all weather conditions on exterior projects.Willingness to work flexible hours, including potential overtime and weekend shifts.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience in journeyman or apprentice-level painting in commercial construction environments.Experience with tenant improvement projects, including interior repainting and touch-ups in active buildings.Familiarity with both interior and exterior painting on commercial, multifamily, and residential properties.Comfort working on a university campus and adapting to institutional project requirements.Ability to follow daily work orders and adapt quickly to changing priorities and site assignments.No formal certifications or medical monitoring required for this role.Why Work Here?You will gain valuable exposure to high-profile commercial and multifamily painting projects in a well-established, reputable Bay Area environment, which can significantly enhance your resume and support long-term growth in the painting industry. Typical hours on the university campus are approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with potential overtime and occasional weekend work depending on project needs. Daily work orders arrive between mid-afternoon and early evening and determine the number of painters needed and the specific sites for the following day, so flexibility and readiness to switch locations are important.
The role involves working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, navigating active facilities, and collaborating with other trades and team members. Painters are expected to wear typical painting attire, including all-white long pants and long sleeves, and sturdy work boots as PPE. You should bring your own painting tools and grip bag with rollers, brushes, and buckets, as well as a packed lunch, since time may not allow leaving the campus or job site during breaks.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Stanford, CA.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
