Job TitleUnder general supervision, performs professional interior and exterior painting, coating and sealing of City facilities; performs related work as assigned.Supervision Received/ExercisedWorks under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance supervisor; does not have supervisory responsibilities.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following essential functions are those that are critical, integral, necessary, crucial, primary and fundamental to the job. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.Receives work orders or project assignment from supervisor.Assembles and prepares necessary materials to complete assignment.Establishes safe work area and coordinates activities with the general public as necessary.Prepares surfaces to be painted by removing old paint, utilizing scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning or pressure washing.Applies primer, new paint or other coating according to work orders; removes graffiti as needed.Cleans brushes, rollers, sprayers and other equipment upon completion, and disposes of paint, solvents and cleaners according to City hazardous materials procedures.Performs a variety of building maintenance duties as assigned including demolition and/or construction of permanent or temporary interior walls, plaster patchwork, roof maintenance and repair and installation of floor coverings.Completes and submits routine reports and other paperwork in a timely manner.Performs other duties as assigned or required.Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years experience in commercial painting and/or building maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Required Licenses or Certifications:Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License.Required Knowledge of:City organization, operations, policies and procedures.Paint and site surface preparation and paint application.Common hand and power tools.Basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.Occupational hazards and safety precautions.Applicable regulations and procedures for the disposal of hazardous chemicals.Required Skill in:Surface cleaning, preparation and application of paint, varnish or other coatings or sealants.Safely using, maintaining and repairing specialized equipment to complete assigned projects.Safely working from ladders and scaffolds.Following oral and written instructions.Utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.Using hand and power tools.Following safety practices and recognizing hazards.Verbal and written communications.Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.Physical Demands / Work Environment:Work is performed primarily outdoors with considerable time spent in moderate to high temperatures (above 90 degrees).Work will require bending, stretching, twisting, balancing, climbing and driving; lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), climbing ladders and working at heights on scaffolding.Work will require body coordination, manual dexterity, near vision and moderate color perception.Work will consist of exposure to wet surfaces, pronounced vibration and dust, hazardous chemicals.Internal applicants must use their personal email to apply, as City of Compton work emails will not be accepted for job applications.
