Overview

As a registered nurse (RN), you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.

Responsibilities

In the Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the RN is responsible for immediate post‑operative care of patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical or procedural interventions. Duties include:

  • Continuous assessment and monitoring of airway patency, respiratory and cardiovascular status, level of consciousness, pain, and surgical sites.
  • Collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe patient recovery and readiness for discharge or transfer.
  • Providing effective patient and family education regarding postoperative expectations and care.
  • Managing a schedule of three 12‑hour shifts per week, commonly 0800–2030 or 0900–2130, with occasional 0645–1915 shifts and limited weekend coverage as needed.

The RN provides individualized patient care, coordinates delivery for patients of all ages, assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care, and documents all activities in the electronic medical record. Additional responsibilities include participating in performance improvement initiatives, advocating for patients, managing resources, supporting orientation of new employees, and contributing to shared decision‑making.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an approved State Board of Nursing program.
  • Experience: None required.
  • Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Current Registered Nurse license in Virginia (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required; ACLS, PALS, or NRP may be required based on assigned work area.
  • Other Minimum Qualifications: Keyboarding skills and computer literacy, including use of electronic medical records. For behavioral health roles, the ability to safely manage disruptive or potentially violent patients.

Compensation Range: $33.52 – $50.28 per hour, based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior experience.
