Description

Under the direction of Urologic Surgeons, the Sr. Physician Assistant (PA) provides clinically expert patient care in support of the Urology Service. The PA will serve as a primary, consistent point of access for all general urology and subspecialty patients at East Campus and will provide continuity of care in the ambulatory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient evaluations, history and physical examinations
  • Develop and execute treatment plans
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing staff
  • Plan discharge and manage patient health issues
  • Prioritize and resolve issues, escalating to physicians as appropriate
  • Manage and document all communications in the electronic medical record system
  • Provide comprehensive care of surgical patients with strong emphasis on patient safety
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, resident team, nursing staff, family, and other team members
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC‑PA)
  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license
  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA
  • Minimum one (1) year of Urology experience as a PA
  • Knowledge of common urologic problems and treatments
  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency, and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information
  • Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care management
  • Excellent communication skills with patients and health care personnel, including clear written, verbal, and telephone communication with a wide variety of people
  • Ability to assess daily status and progress of patients and report effectively to physicians and other medical care personnel
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team
  • Knowledge of medical ethics and laws pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics
  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in acute and chronic care
  • Life‑support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) that include hands‑on practice and in‑person skills assessment; online‑only certification is not acceptable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Outpatient urology experience
  • Surgical outpatient experience

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical
  • Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain them during employment; clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $170,652 - $224,815 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hours of work will be based on the negotiated hourly wage within the hiring pay scale of $77.84 - $102.54 per hour.
