OUTPATIENT NEUROSURGERY NURSE PRACTITIONER (NP)

Position Summary

VHC Health is seeking a highly motivated and patient-focused Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Neurosurgery team. This is a fully outpatient position providing comprehensive clinical management for patients with disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. Working closely with board-certified neurosurgeons, the NP serves as an integral member of the care team, supporting patients throughout their surgical and non-surgical treatment journey.

The Nurse Practitioner will provide pre-operative evaluations, post-operative follow-up care, neurological assessments, patient education, and treatment coordination while ensuring exceptional patient outcomes and continuity of care. This position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in neurosurgical care within a collaborative, high-performing clinical environment.

This is a Monday through Friday outpatient position with no operating room responsibilities, hospital rounding, call requirements, or invasive procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Clinical Patient Care

o Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories, neurological examinations, and review of diagnostic findings.

o Perform pre-operative evaluations to assess surgical readiness and identify potential risk factors.

o Provide post-operative follow-up care for patients recovering from spine and cranial neurosurgical procedures.

o Monitor patient progress and communicate findings to supervising neurosurgeons.

o Assess and manage patients with conditions such as degenerative spine disease, spinal stenosis, disc herniation, radiculopathy, peripheral nerve disorders, and other neurosurgical conditions.

o Review and interpret diagnostic imaging, laboratory studies, and test results.

o Prescribe medications and manage medication therapies in accordance with state regulations and scope of practice.

* Post-Surgical Management

o Evaluate and monitor surgical incision sites for healing and signs of infection or complications.

o Perform wound care management.

o Remove sutures and staples as indicated.

o Identify post-operative concerns and escalate complex clinical issues when appropriate.

o Reinforce post-operative instructions and recovery expectations.

o Monitor patients for complications and coordinate timely interventions as needed.

* Patient Education and Care Coordination

o Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment recommendations, medications, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations.

o Coordinate referrals to physical therapy, pain management, neurology, primary care, imaging services, and other specialty providers.

o Facilitate communication among patients, physicians, specialists, and ancillary services.

o Promote patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.

o Serve as a clinical resource for patients throughout their continuum of care.

* Documentation and Quality

o Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).

o Ensure compliance with organizational policies, clinical standards, and regulatory requirements.

o Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.

o Support clinic workflow efficiency and patient access initiatives.

o Contribute to departmental goals focused on quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and operational excellence.

Education

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or equivalent advanced nursing degree from an accredited institution required.

Experience

* One year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner preferred.

* Experience in neurosurgery, orthopedics, spine surgery, neurology, surgical specialties, or outpatient specialty practice strongly preferred.

* New graduates with strong clinical training and a demonstrated interest in neurosurgery may be considered.

Certification and Licensure

* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

* Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

* Current national certification through ANCC, AANP, or another approved certifying body.

* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

* Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Compensation

At VHC Health, every role contributes to exceptional care, better outcomes, and stronger communities.

Compensation Range: $123,260.80 - $234,145.60 annually
