Occupational Therapist

Organize and deliver occupational therapy to facilitate rehabilitation of the physically-impaired following disease, injury, or surgical intervention. Direct patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance, facilitate learning of skills and functions necessary for adaptation and productivity. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities include:

  • Patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services meetings, and workshops
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
  • Evaluate patient to determine treatment goals, outline delivery of therapy according to assessed needs
  • Plan therapy program to include sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help patients regain physical functions or to adjust to handicaps
  • Consult with members of the rehabilitative team in therapy delivery, consult with medical staff on patient care
  • Select constructive therapy suited to patient needs
  • Educate patients on skills and techniques required for participation in therapy program, evaluate progress, attitudes, and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential
  • Order supplies and equipment
  • Clean and repair tools and equipment
  • Conduct or participate in training medical/nursing/ancillary personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives
  • Design and fit adaptive devices for patient use
  • Document patient care activities, process patient billing
  • Supervise and instruct occupational therapy students and volunteers as delegated, delegate patient treatment responsibilities to ancillary staff as appropriate
  • Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital employees

Qualifications:

Education: Program Graduate, Occupational Therapy Program Graduate

Experience: No minimum experience required

Credentials: CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days, NM Occupational Therapist License or Temporary License

Physical Conditions: Heavy Work

Working conditions: Med Haz: Mod exposure to chemicals/dangerous equip/materials, Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and additionally as required
