Organoid and Biofabrication Core Manager Department: OOR Research Cores Advertised Salary Range: Part/Full Time: Full Time

About UofSC From the Upstate to the Lowcountry, the University of South Carolina system is transforming the lives of South Carolinians through the impact of our eight institutions and 20 locations throughout the state. More than 50,000 students are enrolled at one of eight institutions, including the research campus in Columbia and comprehensive four-year universities in Aiken, Upstate and Beaufort. In addition, our Palmetto College campuses in Salkehatchie, Union, Lancaster and Sumter enable students to earn associate or bachelor's degrees through a combination of in-person, online or blended learning. All of our system institutions place strong emphasis on service — helping to build healthier, more educated communities in South Carolina and beyond.

The University of South Carolina is seeking to hire a Core Manager to provide scientific and operational leadership for the Organoid and Biofabrication Core, a division of the Instrumentation Resource Facility (IRF) within the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Core will provide fee-for-service, collaborative research support, and instrument access for organoid models, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-based models, tissue engineering, bioprinting, and related biofabrication applications. The Core Manager will lead the day-to-day scientific and operational activities of the division and will work directly with investigators to translate research questions into practical, reproducible experimental workflows. A central responsibility of the position is understanding and integrating both upstream and downstream processing for advanced cell-based models, including mammalian cell culture, cell expansion and differentiation, organoid and iPSC workflows, biofabrication, sample preparation, phenotypic characterization, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative analysis. The Manager will collaborate with other IRF divisions and institutional partners to connect these technologies into comprehensive research workflows.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Working knowledge of mammalian cell culture, aseptic technique, cell expansion, cryopreservation, and organoid and stem cell/iPSC model systems, including their differentiation, maintenance, and experimental use.
  • Knowledge of tissue engineering and bioprinting/biofabrication workflows, including biomaterials and bioinks, construct handling, post-fabrication culture, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of integrated upstream and downstream workflows for advanced cell-based models, with working knowledge of flow cytometry and fluorescence/confocal microscopy for sample preparation, characterization, imaging, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Ability to develop, optimize, validate, standardize, document, and troubleshoot complex biological protocols and shared-resource services, including quality assurance, quality control, reproducibility, and SOP development.
  • Ability to assess experimental feasibility, recognize technical limitations, recommend appropriate workflows or complementary analytical approaches, and train users with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and administrative skills sufficient to work with investigators, technical staff, vendors, and institutional stakeholders while managing service requests, scheduling, documentation, and concurrent projects.
  • Ability to create iPSCs from somatic cells.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology, stem cell biology, tissue engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with mammalian cell culture and advanced cell‑based research models, including organoids, stem cells/iPSCs, tissue engineering, and/or biofabrication.
  • Experience with bioprinting or a closely related biofabrication technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop, optimize, troubleshoot, and document biological or bioengineering protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of upstream and downstream processing for advanced cell-based models, with working knowledge of flow cytometry and microscopy as complementary characterization methods.
  • Experience with human iPSC culture and differentiation, organoid model development, and/or other advanced three-dimensional cell culture systems.
  • Experience with bioprinting, tissue engineering, biomaterials, bioinks, or related biofabrication technologies.
  • Experience applying flow cytometry, fluorescence/confocal microscopy, image analysis, or other analytical methods to characterize cells, organoids, or engineered tissues.
  • Experience working in a centralized research core, shared-resource facility, or multidisciplinary research environment, including development and implementation of new research services or standardized workflows.
