Shift: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Job Description

Support the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery staff by providing direct assistance to providers and performing any essential duties as requested. Prepare the procedure room for surgery by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment, obtaining special supplies as indicated by the physician. Set up and operate a variety of specialized instrumentation, manual and powered equipment. Assist in the preparation, transportation, and positioning of patients for surgery and provide physical comfort, safety, and privacy during the procedure. Observe patients for symptoms that may indicate a change in condition and report significant observations to the appropriate member of the medical team for immediate attention. Perform routine and more complex clinical duties, including but not limited to taking and reporting vital signs, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms in an outpatient care setting. Provide a supportive and healing environment to enhance patient and staff satisfaction. Offer comfort measures. Assist with obtaining and assembling records and images prior to patient visits; participate in supply management to ensure supplies and specialty needs are met, including schedule review/pre-visit planning; clean, stock, and prepare exam rooms per protocol; retrieve sterile trays and instruments from the sterile processing department; set up surgical procedure trays and other equipment as needed; take impressions as ordered; complete radiologic testing as ordered while following all safety and documentation guidelines per training and competency. Assist doctors with procedures as requested, including suctioning, retracting, and irrigating the operating field. Work with the manager to formulate a plan for professional development. Attend educational in-services as appropriate. Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Successful completion and certification from a dental assisting program (required).
  • BLS certification and X-ray certification (required).
  • Certification from an accredited Oral & Maxillofacial program (preferred).
  • One to two years of experience in an Oral Surgery practice (preferred).

On-the-job training can be provided. Other equivalent combinations of relevant education and experience may also be considered.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting: 20-50 lbs 0-33% of the workday; 11-25 lbs 34-66% of the workday; 1-10 lbs 67-100% of the workday; maximum lift 50 lbs.
  • Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Standing, walking, and occasional sitting required.
  • Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing).
  • Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.

Environmental Factors

  • Blood-borne pathogens, biohazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock.
  • Floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation.
  • Shift work may be required; travel may be required.
  • Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators.
  • Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.
