Job Description

Navajo Preference Employment Act

Overview

This established position requires obtaining Surgical Technologist Certification and involves rotational scheduling and on‑call coverage (night, weekend, holiday). The role supports a wide range of surgical specialties at both adult and pediatric levels.

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective invasive procedures. Responsibilities include operating room set‑up, maintaining sterile technique, instrument handling, patient preparation, and postoperative care. The Technician may scrub, gown, and glove surgeons and assist in high‑pressure, high‑risk environments.

Qualifications

Necessary Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Completed an approved Surgical Technician training program accredited by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) or on‑the‑job training in a clinical setting or military specialty.
• Certification: Must be certified within six months after completing a 3‑year qualification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA 3yr) – or Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) – or current Certified Tech in Surgery (TS‑C) from NCCT‑3yr 6240 hours.
• Maintain current valid certifications throughout employment, including Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.

Experience

At least nine (9) months of recent experience in the specialties of Dental, Endoscopy, General Surgery, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic, Otolaryngology/ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Podiatry, Hand, Trauma, Urology, and other related procedures for adult and pediatric patients.

Physical

• High‑stress environment with exposure to blood, sharp instruments, chemical agents, radiation, and repetitive motions.
• Requires long periods of standing, walking, lifting, bending, and patient positioning.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and push/pull equipment up to 300 pounds.

• Requires clear, concise communication and sensitivity in stressful situations.
• Multi‑tasking and prioritization while frequently interrupted.
• Maintains focus for prolonged periods and adapts to a flexible schedule.

Environmental

• Exposure to infectious diseases, chemical agents, extreme temperatures, hazardous equipment, loud noises, dust, fumes, gases, and unprotected heights.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Complete surgical technologist didactic and clinical training; scrub all services listed.
• Use Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Standards of Practice for intra‑operative patient care.
• Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique and set up sterile tables with appropriate instruments.
• Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with circulator.
• Scrub, gown, and glove for various surgeries and assist in gowning staff.
• Ensure all equipment is operational and properly labeled.
• Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
• Prepare sterile dressings and assist with patient care support.
• Label and manage medications and solutions per policy.
• Participate in terminal cleaning and room turnover.
• Report equipment issues and low supplies; disassemble and reassemble instruments as needed.
• Identify and correct aseptic technique breaches.
• Monitor inventory and order supplies as required.
• Record electronic health data related to patient service.
• Wear and dispose of personal protective equipment (PPE) safely, including N95 respirators or higher when needed.
• Complete task training for routine cleaning and decontamination per CDC guidelines.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
