Ophthalmic Photographer – Ophthalmology Department – Clinical Research Unit (CRU)

Overview

The Research Photographer will be based in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) within the Department of Ophthalmology and will support a broad range of clinical research activities while providing patient care and advanced ophthalmic imaging. Responsibilities include performing ophthalmic examinations (medical and ocular histories, medication reconciliation, obtaining visual acuity, assessing motility, pupils, confrontation fields), performing manual refractions, tonometry, lensometry, Humphrey visual fields, and administering ophthalmic drops. The role also includes capturing high-quality ophthalmic images using equipment such as Heidelberg OCT, Optovue OCT-A, Humphrey visual field, Oculus Pentacam, specular microscopy, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ICG, slit lamp photography, and other investigational imaging devices in accordance with research protocols. Additional duties include coordinating clinical research visits, maintaining regulatory documentation, ensuring accurate data entry into electronic data capture (EDC) systems, updating electronic health records, managing ophthalmic equipment and medical supplies, and ensuring HIPAA and GCP compliance. The role also includes supporting physician scheduling, coordinating referrals, retrieving relevant medical records, onboarding new staff, and contributing to workflow improvements that enhance the research participant experience.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate patient scheduling for diagnostic photography and angiography of the eye; maintain patient records.
• Perform ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic studies as designated by the ordering physician, uploading images to the Electronic Medical Record for review, and review quality with the ordering physician.
• Prepare photographic material for weekly Retina Conferences and ophthalmic photographic exhibits at meetings of ophthalmologists and/or ophthalmic photographers.
• Instruct resident physicians in fundus photography procedures.
• Maintain and repair ophthalmic photography equipment used in the laboratory.
• Support core functions related to patient care and human-subjects research records as applicable.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

• Required
• Education
  High School Diploma
• Experience
  2 years of experience in ophthalmic imaging with proficiency in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fundus photography, external and slit lamp photography; experience with ophthalmic imaging procedures (IOL Master or Lenstar, corneal topography, digital fluorescein angiography and ICG angiography) within a clinical setting
• Licenses and Certifications
  (CRA) CERT RETINAL ANGIOGRAPHER within 1 year or (OCT) OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHER within 1 year

Preferred

• Experience
  College or vocational training in ophthalmic diagnostic photography and angiography; 1 year of clinical trials/research experience

Job Duties
