Job Overview

The Oncology Nurse Navigator at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is a professional registered nurse with proficient oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Utilizing the nursing process, the Navigator promotes informed decision‑making and timely access to quality patient care while providing a vital link in communication between multidisciplinary providers, both internal and external to MUSC during initial treatment planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized assistance to patients and caregivers to navigate the healthcare system and overcome barriers to care.
  • Promote informed decision‑making and timely access to quality patient care.
  • Serve as a communication link between multidisciplinary providers, both internal and external to MUSC.
  • Perform nursing assessments and develop care plans using the nursing process.
  • Coordinate and facilitate initial treatment planning activities.

Training and Education

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and a minimum of three years of related clinical nursing experience required; oncology nursing experience preferred.
• Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in lieu of a BSN may substitute for the educational requirement.
• Extensive knowledge of complex medical terminology and advanced disease processes.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and critical‑thinking skills, ability to prioritize and delegate effectively, and ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish collaborative relationships internally and externally.

Licensure & Certification

• Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and in temperature extremes.
  • Ability to work from elevated and confined spaces, kneel, bend, twist, squat, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders; fine manipulation of fingers and hands.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., lift objects from floor up to 36 inches, and lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. with assistance for additional weight.
  • Visual acuity of 20/40 (corrected) in one or both eyes and ability to discern colors, depth, and maintain peripheral vision.
  • Hearing acuity (corrected) and the ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and in a latex‑safe environment.
