O&M Field Technician- Renewable Energy
Gridworks is seeking a BESS Field Technician to support operations and maintenance across utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System sites in the Albuquerque, NM area.
The right candidate brings hands-on experience in power systems, industrial electrical work, or a related technical field and is ready to apply those skills in a utility-scale energy storage environment. Experience working directly with BESS is a plus, but candidates with strong electrical fundamentals and a track record of field work are encouraged to apply. Gridworks provides equipment-specific training and invests in technicians who want to grow with the company long-term.
The Field Technician is the primary hands-on resource responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance, alarm response, and site safety compliance. This role is a strong fit for self-driven technicians who take ownership of their work, make sound technical judgments in the field, and maintain the documentation discipline that utility-scale O&M demands.
About the Company
Established in 2014, Gridworks is a leading EPC contractor for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. Operating primarily across the Southwest and expanding nationwide, we have completed nearly 3 GW of solar and battery energy storage installations. Gridworks is well-positioned for continued growth in the rapidly expanding clean energy sector.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Operations & Maintenance
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on battery energy storage systems, including battery containers, inverters, and power conversion systems (PCS)
  • Perform routine BESS maintenance including container inspections, thermal management system checks, and DC electrical inspections
  • Conduct routine site inspections, identify equipment anomalies, and initiate corrective actions
  • Maintain inverter health across all PCS units; perform fault resets and component-level troubleshooting as needed
  • Support spare parts assessment and ensure critical components are tracked for lead-time risk
Alarm Response & Incident Management
  • Respond to site alarms and dispatch notifications within required response windows
  • Triage and resolve field-level faults; escalate complex issues to engineering or OEM support with documented findings
  • Coordinate with the 24/7 Remote Operations Center to confirm alarm validity and close out events with field verification
Communication & Documentation
  • Interface with SCADA and equipment-level systems to support troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Log all maintenance activities, fault events, corrective actions, and parts usage
  • Communicate site status clearly to the Remote Operations Center and management
Safety Accountability
At Gridworks, safety is not a program or a policy - it is the foundation of how we work. We believe that every technician who goes home safe at the end of the day is a direct reflection of the culture we build together. No deadline, no availability metric, and no client expectation will ever take priority over the safety of our team.
Battery energy storage sites present real hazards - medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, stored electrochemical energy, and arc flash risk are present every day on our sites. Every Gridworks technician is expected to understand those hazards, work within established procedures, and look out for the person next to them.
Safety responsibilities for this role include:
  • Participate in pre-job briefings and job hazard analyses (JHA) before any work begins
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as written
  • Wear appropriate PPE for the task, including specified arc-rated clothing and equipment
  • Work in full compliance with NFPA 70E, OSHA, and all site-specific safety requirements
Qualifications and Requirements:
Required
  • 1 year minimum experience in power systems, industrial electrical work, or a related technical field
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience with power conversion, inverter-based, or comparable electromechanical equipment; direct BESS experience is a plus but not required
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and equipment manuals
  • Strong written documentation skills including field logs, maintenance records, and incident reports
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel between sites
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen, and obtain and maintain site access credentials
Preferred
  • 2+ years direct experience with utility-scale BESS or energy storage systems
  • NFPA 70E electrical safety training and arc flash awareness
  • Experience working with SCADA or energy management systems in an operational setting
  • Prior O&M experience under an availability-guarantee or performance-contract framework
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • MV switching experience or qualification
  • Electrical craft certification, journeyman license, or equivalent credential demonstrating proficiency in electrical systems

Training & Development
Gridworks provides equipment-specific training for all field technicians. New technicians receive hands-on instruction covering battery energy storage systems, power conversion equipment, and supporting site technology at the site where that equipment is installed. Training is delivered through a combination of structured coursework, OEM resources, and on-the-job mentorship from experienced team members.
We expect our technicians to come with strong technical foundations. We commit to building on those foundations with the equipment knowledge and operational experience needed to perform at a high level.
Equal Opportunity Employer
Gridworks is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and sustainable workplace. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and business needs, without regard to any protected status.
