About The Unit
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 36‑bed ICU located in the Meijer Heart Center specializing in highly acute post‑cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. Nurse techs care for a wide range of patients and devices, including heart/lung transplant patients and post‑operative open‑heart patients. We are experts in caring for the most critically ill patients in our area and throughout Michigan. We are at the forefront of cardiac medicine, engaging in cutting‑edge innovation and research. We seek Nurse Techs with experience in roles that require constant critical thinking, resilience, a high level of self‑motivation and drive, flexibility with availability, commitment to excellence, and receptiveness to constructive feedback.
Scope Of Work
ICU orientation weeks require flexibility to train during weekdays for several weeks before phasing into regular night shifts. Nurse Technicians work as team members in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with complex ICU procedures such as placing arterial lines, monitoring vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, and charting.
- Acting as a safety attendant for patients.
- Floated to other units as a 1:1 patient safety sitter for the shift.
- Providing input in the development of individualized plans of care.
- Ensuring required documentation is performed accurately and timely.
- Articulating the nursing technician role to patients, families, and health team members.
- Cleaning patient environment, work area, and equipment; troubleshooting and reporting equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
- Demonstrating high moral and ethical standards and advocating privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organization data.
Orientation Requirements
Orientation includes:
- Required 8:00‑16:30 Nurse Tech classes Monday‑Wednesday during week 1 of employment.
- Adult Critical Care class during week 3 of orientation, typically on a Friday.
- Up to 11 weeks of preceptor training, 7:00‑19:30 weekdays with rotational weekends.
- Continued availability for weekday orientation shifts in the fall if starting in summer.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days.
- Inpatient care experience strongly preferred.
