Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant, Pediatric CVICU

Role Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a member of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. The unit is a 29‑bed, post‑surgical and cardiac medical unit serving more than 750 patients annually, with plans to expand to 36 beds. The APP collaborates with attending physicians, fellows, and a multidisciplinary team of NPs and PAs, providing high‑quality critical care to children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Responsibilities

• Receive overnight sign‑out and perform pre‑rounding on assigned patients.
• Develop a patient‑specific plan of care, present on rounds, write a daily note, and implement the agreed‑upon plan.
• Perform procedural duties including intubation/extubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion and removal, percutaneous dialysis drain placement, and pacing wire removal.
• Participate in APP clinical ladder, grand rounds, APP council, and task forces.
• Educate fellows and visiting residents and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team.

Essential Functions

• Provide medical services in accordance with the NP/PA’s education, training and experience and in collaboration with a physician.
• Consult with a physician regarding tasks or procedures beyond the NP/PA’s competence.
• Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and perform physical examinations.
• Order and review diagnostic studies, laboratories, imaging, and therapeutic procedures.
• Administer, order, matriculate and prescribe medications, including controlled substances under DEA license, when required.
• Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory testing and screening procedures.
• Order and facilitate therapy services such as physical, occupational, respiratory, radiology and nursing services.
• Perform or request diagnostic studies and obtain informed consent as indicated.
• Arrange hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork.
• Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB as directed by the supervising physician.
• Assist the supervising physician in the operating room and practice under supervision.
• Consider age‑specific needs of patients and communicate effectively with patients, families and community members.
• Recognize situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life‑saving procedures.
• Facilitate coordination of inpatient and outpatient care, including community resources.
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide patient teaching and counseling.
• Perform any other duties assigned.
• Supervision is provided by the supervising/sponsoring physician; direct onsite, electronic or phone supervision may be used.
• Maintain professional practice through formal performance evaluations and ongoing OPPE.

Minimum Qualifications

• Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Education

• Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.
• Graduate of an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Licensure & Certification

• Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in California and certified as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) by the State of California.
• National Board Certified Nurse Practitioner from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
• DEA license for controlled substances if prescribing to outpatients.
• Additional board certifications may be required by specific departments or specialties.
• Physician Assistant requirements: Bachelor’s degree, accredited PA program, licensure and certification in California, BLS, DEA license, and NCCPA certification.

Additional Information

Note: New graduate NPs will have six months from graduation to obtain national board certification.

Salary

Hourly: $87.55 to $109.44
