About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life:
We are seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our specialty clinic team in Peoria. This is a clinic-based role built around continuity of care: you will carry your own panel of patients through evaluation, treatment, and long-term follow-up in gastroenterology and hepatology, with meaningful exposure to clinical research and emerging therapies along the way.
A typical clinic day runs about 14 patients Monday through Thursday and 8 on Friday, a mix of new consultations and follow-ups. You will perform comprehensive evaluations and pretreatment reviews, establish diagnoses, build and adjust treatment plans, order and interpret workup, and educate patients and families about their diagnosis and therapeutic options. You will collaborate closely with physicians on complex cases while taking ownership of your patients throughout their care journey.
This is an experienced-provider role . Ideal candidates bring at least five years of experience as an NP or PA in hepatology, gastroenterology, or another applicable specialty-care environment, and are comfortable evaluating patients, establishing diagnoses, and managing patients with an appropriate level of independence. Candidates whose primary specialty experience is in surgical care or endocrinology should bring at least six years as an NP or PA, including substantial experience seeing and managing patients independently — Physician Assistants should have done so under the guidance and oversight of a supervising physician as appropriate.
New NP or PA graduates may be considered on a limited basis if they bring at least 10 years of prior RN experience in gastroenterology, endocrinology, hepatology, or surgical care. This pathway is intended for new APP graduates who already possess significant specialty clinical experience from their nursing careers.
You will also gain exposure to clinical research and emerging therapies — caring for research patients, recognizing appropriate therapeutic opportunities, and educating eligible patients about available trials. Monday through Thursday stays focused on clinical care, while Friday is a structured half-day for charting and administrative work , so documentation does not follow you home.
Why This Role Stands Out:
- You own a panel — real continuity with your patients rather than one-off coverage
- Deepen genuine specialty expertise in gastroenterology, hepatology, and chronic hepatic disease
- Practice with a meaningful level of clinical autonomy, with physicians available for complex cases
- Hands-on exposure to clinical research and emerging treatment options while practicing clinically
- Develop additional procedural skills, including FibroScan
- A protected Friday half-day for charting and administrative work — and no weekend clinic
- A defined pathway for highly experienced specialty RNs stepping into their first NP or PA role
What We’re Looking For:
- An experienced NP or PA with a strong background in specialty medicine and complex patient care
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate patients, establish diagnoses, and drive treatment planning
- Sound clinical judgment and the confidence to manage an assigned panel with real independence
- Excellent patient communication and interpersonal skills
- Organized and attentive to clinical documentation and follow-through
- Comfortable collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary clinical teams
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, consultations, pretreatment reviews, and follow-up visits.
- Assess patients, establish diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment plans within scope of practice.
- Manage an assigned panel of patients and serve as a primary clinical point of contact throughout their care.
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and therapeutic options.
- Collaborate with physicians on complex cases, diagnoses, and treatment decisions.
- Identify and appropriately refer patients requiring additional specialty evaluation or services.
- Educate eligible patients about available clinical research and therapeutic trial opportunities.
- Participate in the care and monitoring of applicable clinical research patients.
- Perform applicable in-clinic procedures, including FibroScan, once appropriately trained and qualified.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Monitor quality-of-care metrics and contribute to established patient-care standards.
- Participate in applicable NP/PA call coverage based on training, experience, and departmental needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
- Current or eligible AZ NP or PA license
- Appropriate national board certification
- Nurse Practitioner candidates must maintain applicable RN and NP licensure
- Physician Assistant candidates must maintain applicable NCCPA certification
- Ability to evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients within an established scope of practice
- Experience meeting one of the following pathways: (1) five or more years as an NP or PA in hepatology, gastroenterology, or another applicable specialty-care setting; (2) six or more years as an NP or PA with a primary background in surgical care or endocrinology, including experience independently seeing patients, evaluating clinical presentations, and establishing diagnoses and treatment plans within scope of practice; or (3) new NP or PA graduate with at least 10 years of prior RN experience in gastroenterology, endocrinology, hepatology, or surgical care
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with physicians, fellow NPs and PAs, clinical staff, and patients
- Ability to complete required GCP and IATA training upon hire
- Valid authorization to work in the United States for any employer
Preferred Background:
- NP or PA experience in outpatient gastroenterology or hepatology
- Experience caring for patients with chronic hepatic disease
- Specialty experience in endocrinology or surgical care
- Clinical research or clinical trial exposure
- Experience managing a patient panel with a high level of independence
- Experience performing FibroScan procedures
- Comfort working in an electronic medical record and standard office software
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills
- Leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential
- Interest in pursuing additional specialty certifications and continued professional development
This Role Is Likely a Fit If You…
- Have five or more years of NP or PA experience in gastroenterology, hepatology, or another applicable specialty.
- Have extensive surgical or endocrinology APP experience and are comfortable independently evaluating and managing patients.
- Are a newly graduated NP or PA with at least 10 years of prior RN experience in GI, endocrinology, hepatology, or surgical care.
- Enjoy managing your own panel and taking real ownership of ongoing patient care.
- Want exposure to both traditional specialty care and clinical research.
- Value physician collaboration while maintaining meaningful clinical independence.
- Appreciate a weekday schedule with dedicated Friday time for charting and administrative work.
This Role May Not Be a Fit If You…
- Are a new NP or PA graduate without at least 10 years of qualifying RN specialty experience.
- Have limited specialty-care experience and are seeking an entry-level APP position.
- Are looking exclusively for a general primary care position.
- Prefer a fully remote or hybrid clinical role.
- Have little interest in gastroenterology, hepatology, chronic hepatic disease, or clinical research.
- Prefer a position with minimal documentation or administrative responsibility.
- Would rather not carry a steady clinic volume of roughly 14 patients per day.
Why Join Us:
This role offers an uncommon combination: a patient panel of your own, deep specialty clinical work, procedural exposure including FibroScan, and a working knowledge of clinical research — all in one outpatient role.
Experienced APPs will apply the clinical judgment and patient-management skills they already have while expanding their expertise in gastroenterology, hepatology, and chronic hepatic disease. Newly graduated NPs and PAs with 10 or more years of qualifying RN specialty experience have a genuine path to translate that bedside and specialty knowledge into advanced practice.
You will also have a schedule designed around the realities of clinical practice, including a Friday half-day dedicated to charting and administrative responsibilities , which keeps the rest of the week focused on patients.
