This is a per diem position with varying shifts.

Job Summary

The NP/PA will provide consultative medical support to orthopedic and other surgical patients throughout the hospital. Responsibilities include performing initial consultation on high‑risk post‑operative patients in the orthopedic and spine services and daily follow‑up as determined by the patients’ medical status. Hospitalist NPs and PAs work closely with orthopedic/surgical teams to coordinate patient care, daily rounding, full assessment of medical conditions, medication review, peri‑operative management, documentation, and discharge coordination with case manager and attending physician. Communication with patients’ PCPs is required when medication changes occur and to arrange follow‑up of post‑operative complications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or adult or family nurse practitioner certification
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of acute care inpatient experience, preferably in managing complex medical patients
  • Current DEA license, Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist orthopedic surgeons in surgery and coordinate clinical support for orthopedic surgeons
  • Participate in surgeries assigned by orthopedic service physicians, chief PA, and chief resident
  • Round on orthopedic patients and perform histories and physicals as needed
  • Initiate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and write prescriptions within parameters of license
  • Make accurate identification of problems/diagnoses based on correct interpretation of findings
  • Communicate with primary physician about plan of care
  • Act as liaison between medical staff and patients and between medical staff and allied health professionals
  • Maintain current, accurate medical record documentation including discharge summary page 1’s
  • Participate in physician assistant and orthopedic department improvement initiatives, education and research programs
  • Assist with development/expansion of protocols, clinical pathways, and physician orders
  • Work closely with case manager to identify individual patient variances from established protocols throughout the course of care
  • Assist with inpatient pain management program and evaluate effectiveness of pain plan daily with pain management team
  • Respond to calls for orthopedic consultation from all areas, including nursing units, ambulatory care, PACU and Bond Center
  • Participate in training and education of physician assistants and medical students and attend grand rounds weekly
  • Assist attending physicians with research and presentations as time allows
  • Attend daily morning lectures in orthopedics as time permits
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team for development of educational materials for patients and allied health professionals
  • Assist in the development of continuing education conferences for health professionals
  • Plan time away from work appropriately, arrive and leave at appropriate times based on OR schedule and patient load on floors, use unplanned earned time appropriately
  • Perform other related duties as required and participate in annual safety review

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner or PA licensed in the Commonwealth of MA
  • Basic Life Support certification required, preferred by AHA/RC
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification required, preferred by AHA/RC

EDUCATION

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Graduate of an accredited PA program or master’s prepared in an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • 1-3 years of experience

PAY RANGE

$64.19 - $87.29 hourly wage range. The pay range is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
