Description

Provide direct patient care and coordinate nursing activities to facilitate safe, quality patient care at the unit/department level. Acts as a role model and change agent by initiating and accepting changes for improved patient care and cost reductions. Maintains active communication and collaborates with physicians, staff and other managers to meet specialty, departmental and organizational goals. Under the direction of the Director, may assist with other management responsibilities including budget management, planning, increased throughput and patient care management.

Responsibilities

  • Participate with other managers in developing, implementing, and reviewing policies and procedures that guide and support the assigned services.
  • Provide support to staff to ensure patients have a positive care experience.
  • Assist with the resolution of patient/family complaints and escalation to the director as appropriate.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining departmental staffing plans for all areas supervised.
  • Supervise assigned staff and provide necessary education, orientation, and support.
  • Contribute to annual operating and capital budgets and implement corrective plans as needed.
  • Provide front‑line leadership as a resource, mentor, and role model in delivering patient care using a team approach.
  • Coordinate equipment and supply needs.
  • Attend department meetings, management meetings, and conduct staff huddles.
  • Monitor safety compliance and foster a culture of safety.
  • Form an effective work team through communication, team‑building, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Support departmental performance improvement and quality activities.
  • Assist with additional management duties such as interviewing and hiring personnel, scheduling staff, timekeeping, and maintaining personnel records.
  • Provide staff performance feedback including annual reviews and discipline as needed.
  • Maintain high‑level clinical competence in assessing and managing patient care.
  • Provide orientation/education for staff, students, and community organizations.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested.

Qualifications

  • Current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or active pursuit of a B.S. in Nursing.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of RN perioperative experience.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) or alternative certification preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified within six (6) months of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified within six (6) months of hire.
  • Proof of completion of mandatory reporter abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
  • English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and knowledge of surgeon needs, procedures, and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with staff, management, and physicians.
