Nuclear Medicine Technologist Supervisor

Overview

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist Supervisor is licensed in all scopes of practice as defined by the State of California Radiologic Health branch and performs routine to complex diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures using radiopharmaceuticals to assist in diagnosis and/or treatment in both the inpatient and outpatient environment.

The technologist must be able to work safely in an acute care setting and be able to interact accordingly with anesthesia and/or other patient care departments that visit the Nuclear Medicine environment. Collects, prepares and analyzes biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation. Responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures on all Nuclear Medicine equipment as required by the department.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership and Supervision
  • Manage all technologists and ancillary support staff under direct supervision.
  • Organize workflow, coordinate daily schedules and shift coverage.
  • Maintain knowledge of all procedures and equipment; maintain documentation.
  • Ensure departmental and staff productivity.
  • Orient and train assigned staff, students, residents, and faculty.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and effective communication with staff, other departments and physicians.
• Adheres to Policies and Procedures
  • Utilize proper body mechanics to ensure patient safety when moving/transferring patients and equipment.
  • Follow established radiation safety guidelines; use appropriate patient shielding.
  • Follow department and hospital guidelines for attendance and tardiness.
  • Remain current and compliant with all safety policies reviewed in the Medical Center Annual Safety Training module.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, co‑workers, physicians and other departments.
  • Ensure work environment is clean and compliant with infection control and environmental health and safety standards.
  • Maintain professional appearance and adhere to department dress code; display hospital ID badge.
  • Adhere to SNMMI, NMTCB, ARRT, and ASRT practice and ethics standards.
• Information Management
  • Demonstrate competency in the Radiology Information System, including proper scheduling and completion of patient exams.
  • Demonstrate competency in the Medical Center's current Electronic Health Record and ordering systems.
  • Demonstrate competency on the Nuclear Medicine systems.
  • Ensure clinical data is correct and appropriate for specific procedures; verify order in APEX prior to starting each procedure.
  • Demonstrate competency in the Radiology PACS system and related downtime procedures.
  • Complete all exams in the radiology computer system following the procedure.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Incident Reporting System.
  • Use hospital/department computer for business only and log off upon completion.

  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and practice; attend assigned staff development activities.
  • Participate in cross‑training activities when necessary.
  • Recognize and perform duties that are not directly assigned.
  • Stay current with technical changes in Nuclear Medicine and Radiology by attending professional meetings, seminars, or other learning activities.
  • Comply with department expectations and standards; comply with ARRT, NMTCB, and state accreditation CE requirements.
• Performance Improvement
  • Ensure daily, monthly, or annual quality control tests are complete and accurate; report non‑compliance to appropriate resources.
  • Participate in clinical and research protocol development, maintenance, improvement, and implementation.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and reporting of incidents, including patient and employee injuries, in a timely manner.
  • Participate in and encourage staff participation in the department's performance improvement activities.
• Budgetary
  • Maintain adequate level of supplies in the department; order supplies when necessary.
  • Know and comply with the budget and staffing standards.
  • Process invoices and maintain payment records for the department.
  • Identify opportunities for cost containment.
  • Communicate suggestions to increase productivity or quality of work.
  • Ensure patient information and billing codes are appropriate; complete all billing by end of shift.
• Other Functions and Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the general scope of job, training and licensure.

Required

• Current California CNMT (Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist)
• American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)(N) or Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB)
• Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on radiology modality techniques; motivate and inspire staff to improve services.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
• Applied background in nuclear medicine and associated modalities; knowledge of principles, protocols, terms and concepts; skill operating imaging equipment.
• Ability to assist with personnel management issues, such as performance reviews, disciplinary actions, etc.
• Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with staff, patients and other medical personnel.
• Knowledge of relevant regulatory agency standards.
• Proven ability to supervise and coordinate activities of subordinate staff, establish priorities and delegate work assignments.
• Solid communication skills both written and verbal; demonstrated ability to listen actively and counsel and work in a collaborative manner.
• Computer proficiency and competency in MS Word and Excel; knowledge of electronic medical / health records.

Preferred

• Two to three years of supervisory experience.
• Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes.
• American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)(CT) or Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
• Certification Board (NMTCB)(CT).
• BLS (CPR).

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement will be guided by collective bargaining agreement rules.
