Product Design Engineer II will be a key contributor to New Product Development (NPD) process, driving lighting products from early concept and feasibility through detailed design, validation, production launch, and post-launch support. The ideal candidate will have extensive lighting industry experience, strong product-development ownership, and the ability to work independently while collaborating across Engineering, Product Management, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Quality, and manufacturing partners to deliver innovative products that meet performance, cost, quality, and schedule targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to New Product Development projects from concept and feasibility through design validation, pilot builds, production launch, and mass production.
  • Translate product, market, and customer requirements into practical engineering requirements, design concepts, and manufacturable lighting solutions.
  • Develop and design plastic and metal mechanical parts, including but not limited to extrusions, sheet metal, die-cast parts, and injection-molded parts.
  • Own engineering analysis, tolerance definition, DFM/DFA reviews, prototyping, and design iteration to ensure product performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Create and maintain new-product BOMs, evaluate component and tooling costs, and support cost targets throughout the NPD process.
  • Plan and support engineering testing, design verification/validation, and prototype evaluation; guide junior engineers and technicians in completing these activities.
  • Partner with suppliers and contract manufacturers on tooling, samples, pilot builds, production readiness, issue resolution, quality, and on-time launch execution.
  • Support product qualification and regulatory compliance activities, including UL, Intertek/ETL, and other applicable requirements, as part of the product-development schedule.
  • Generate and maintain product specifications, engineering drawings, assembly instructions, user instructions, and other product-development documentation required for release to production.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Operations, Quality, and customers as needed to support product definition, design reviews, technical presentations, and successful product introduction.
  • Provide post-launch engineering support and sustain released products, including design improvements, cost reductions, quality improvements, and resolution of manufacturing or field issues.
  • Maintain accurate product design documentation and complete other engineering tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 3-5+ years of product design or product development experience in the lighting industry; Mechanical or Electrical Engineering background preferred.
  • Demonstrated New Product Development experience taking physical products from concept through validation, production launch, and mass production.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD/modeling software; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of LED lighting products, lighting design fundamentals, and the interaction of mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal design considerations.
  • Working knowledge of plastic and metal manufacturing processes, tooling, DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and production-ready design practices.
  • Strong project ownership, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across functions and with external manufacturing partners.
  • Working knowledge of lighting testing, design verification/validation methods, and applicable product qualification or regulatory processes.
  • General understanding of lighting manufacturing operations, product introduction, production ramp, quality, and sustaining-engineering processes.
