Neurophysiology Tech I

Job Summary

To record electrical activity arising from the brain, central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems using techniques such as:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Nerve Condition Studies (NCS)
  • Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP)
  • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP)
  • Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)

This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree or associate's degree with two (2) years of healthcare experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required

None.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the functions and disorders of the nervous system and the principles and practical applications of neurodiagnostic testing.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, family members, and staff.
  • Ability to recognize normal and abnormal electrical activity.
  • Ability to comprehend computer averaging and data acquisition.

Responsibilities

  • Develop rapport with patients and explain testing procedures; prepare patients for testing.
  • Obtain and record patient medical history.
  • Elicit and record electrical potentials and interpret responses for review by a neurologist.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment; report equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Perform long‑term EEG/video monitoring in accordance with established procedures; transcribe digital EEG data.
  • Comply with safety, environmental, and infection control practices and procedures.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Exposure to noise, heat, cold, biohazardous conditions, radiation, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds. Frequent reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking. Occasional bending, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
