Work Schedule Summary: Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day with availability from 7:00 am – 5:30 pm. Opportunities for a compressed 4-day, 10-hour schedule may be available after completing initial training periods, depending on operational needs and supervisor approval. Opportunities for a hybrid telework schedule may be considered after the initial training period, provided the arrangement is supported by operational needs and individual performance. Telework arrangements are not guaranteed and may be modified or discontinued at any time based on business requirements or performance. Employees approved for hybrid telework must provide their own private workspace, secure internet connection, and demonstrate the ability to work independently.

Job Summary

The Division of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to function as a member of the neurology triage team. This position delivers professional nursing care to patients via phone or patient portal. The Clinical Nurse uses organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status; implements nursing interventions to modify symptoms; develops, implements and evaluates patient care plans to improve outcomes and ensure a safe, therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities

1. Performs phone management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
2. Discusses patient and family concerns over the phone and/or via the electronic health record.
3. Provides patient/family education surrounding common neurological conditions.
4. Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.
5. Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in the patient’s record.
6. Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies the plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals; communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.
7. Develops and participates in educating patients and their families about care programs.
8. Communicates lab and other test results to families.
9. Provides medication refills.
10. Assists providers and staff with patient-related paperwork (letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, preauthorization).
11. Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
12. Works closely with the triage team to provide high-quality, efficient care to patients and families.
13. Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
14. Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
15. Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
16. Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Meet with each patient and their parents to review any questions regarding their visit.
2. Educate the patient and parents regarding any new medications prescribed.
3. Work with clinic medical assistants to keep the clinic running smoothly.
4. Assist providers.
5. Triage phone messages received by patients and families seen in clinic.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

1. Current RQI HealthCare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
2. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the Interstate Compact if switching residency to Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

Preferred

1. Some positions may require ACLS, PALS, or NRP certifications within one year of hire.
