Job Summary
nThe Neurocritical Care Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care for the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with complex neurological conditions in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Working in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members, the NP delivers high-quality care for patients with conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, status epilepticus, neuromuscular failure, and post-neurosurgical complications. Perform comprehensive assessments, neurological exams, and interpret diagnostic tests (CT, MRI, EEG, labs, etc.)
nManage critically ill neuro patients in collaboration with intensivists and neurologists
nPerform and assist with procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement, lumbar punctures, and ventilator management (as credentialed)
nMonitor and manage intracranial pressure, seizures, and cerebral perfusion
nParticipate in daily ICU rounds and contribute to treatment planning and decision-making
nProvide education to patients, families, and staff about neurological conditions and treatment plans
nDocument clinical assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic health record (EHR)
nAssist with transitions of care, including discharge planning and communication with rehab or step-down units
nParticipate in quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and staff education
nMaintain current knowledge of advancements in neurocritical care through continuing education
nQualifications
nMaster's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
nIf APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
nMinimum 1-2 years of experience in critical care or neurology setting preferred
nCurrent licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
nCurrent Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
nState Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
nNational board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC), Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader: Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP-C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (AGNP), Adult (ANP)
nCertification in Neurocritical Care (e.g., CCRN or CNRN) preferred
nObtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
