Network Technician – TC Closet CleanupLocation: San Antonio, Texas (Onsite) and Support Off- business hours and Weekends.Rate: 38/hrThe Network Technician will be responsible for maintaining and cleaning Telecom Closets (TCs), also known as IDFs/MDFs, across corporate and remote sites. In addition to performing cleanup duties such as organizing cabling and managing infrastructure, this role includes specialized tasks like fiber optic cleaning and maintenance. The technician will work hands-on to ensure that both copper and fiber cabling meet industry standards and remain in optimal working condition, supporting the network team in maintaining the physical layer of infrastructure.Key Responsibilities:Telecom Closet (TC) Cleanup:Remove abandoned cables and equipment, ensuring a clutter-free environment.Re-dress patch cords, organize cable trays, and ensure proper cable management.Re-label cables, ports, and patch panels for accuracy and consistency with network documentation.Assist with rack elevation and planning for network hardware installations.Identify and decommission unused or obsolete network equipment and update documentation.Documentation & Reporting:Update network diagrams, asset inventories, and documentation after cleaning or maintenance tasks.Ensure that all work complies with structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA-568, BICSI).Record all cleanup and fiber maintenance activities for accountability and future reference.General Responsibilities:Assist senior engineers with network cutovers, hardware installations, and port tracing as required.Follow safety protocols while working in confined spaces (closets), handling tools, and dealing with network equipment.Work with cross-functional teams to ensure the network infrastructure meets uptime and performance standards.Provide feedback on closet conditions and escalate Non-Compliance or risk issues to senior engineers.Required Skills & Qualifications:Basic knowledge of Layer 1 networking concepts (Ethernet, fiber, patch panels, switch ports).Experience with fiber optic cable cleaning, testing, and maintenance (OTDR, power meters, visual inspection).Familiar with structured cabling, copper, and fiber cable management best practices.Experience with network hardware such as switches, routers, and patch panels.Comfortable working in tight or confined spaces (closets, under desks) and occasionally using ladders.Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a focus on maintaining clean, efficient cabling.Ability to lift and move networking equipment and tools (up to 50 lbs).Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and document work.Preferred Qualifications:4+ years of experience in IT support, cabling infrastructure, or data center operations.Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, BICSI Installer, or vendor-specific certifications for fiber optic cabling (e.g., Panduit, Siemon).Experience with Cisco, Arista, or other network equipment for patching and fiber optic connections.
