Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) - Peds Neonatology

The individual selected for this position will function as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) delivering critical care medical management in the Newborn Critical Care Center based at North Carolina Children's Hospital, the delivery rooms of North Carolina Women's Hospital, components of the UNC Hospitals, and the brand‑new North Carolina Surgical Hospital. The practitioner works in a multi‑disciplinary, academic environment and interacts with students, residents, fellows, faculty, staff and other allied health professionals.

UNC Children's Hospital is a recognized level IV intensive care facility located on the 4th and 6th floors of North Carolina Children's Hospital, staffed by 16 board‑certified attending neonatologists, 32 nurse practitioners and more than 150 neonatal specialists.

Summary

As an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) within the interdisciplinary team, the NNP provides high‑quality, cost‑effective care within the approved scope of practice in collaboration with supervising neonatologists. The APP fulfills responsibilities for complete daily medical management of critically ill newborn infants, including delivery room resuscitation, initial stabilization, mechanical ventilation, parenteral drug administration, emergency management, and continuous medical care. Care is delivered independently using approved protocols and procedures under the supervision of attending neonatologists.

Responsibilities

1. Clinical: Obtains relevant health and medical history, performs thorough physical assessment, reviews and interprets diagnostic tests, develops differential diagnoses and treatment plans, orders evidence‑based pharmacological agents, performs preventive health screening, maintains comprehensive records, and consistently updates care plans. Leads initiatives to improve productivity and performs medical procedures in line with departmental guidelines.
2. Education: Educates clients, families, clinicians, staff and students regarding medical conditions, treatments, and follow‑up. Develops educational materials and provides instruction to various health‑care team members.
3. Leadership: Provides instruction and precepting to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillary staff and students; participates in community outreach and system improvement initiatives.
4. Professionalism: Interacts respectfully and timely with patients, families, and colleagues; responds quickly to meet customer needs; shares responsibility for workload with team members.
5. Quality/Research: Engages in continuous quality improvement, initiates and revises protocols and guidelines, leads interdisciplinary teams, and works to influence policy‑making bodies to improve patient care.

Education Requirements

• Completion of an accredited graduate‑level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

• Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department.

Professional Experience Requirements

• No prior experience required.

• Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong written and verbal communication, analytical skills, and thorough documentation in the medical record for accurate billing.
