Neonatal Hospitalist (Pediatrician)

Overview

The Neonatology Division at Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City is seeking board certified or eligible pediatricians to provide clinical care in our regional referral Level IV NICU. Preferred candidates should have an interest in scholarly pursuits, including education and quality improvement initiatives.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Collaborate with a neonatologist to treat complex patients. The position begins as a full‑time, front‑line neonatal provider in the Children’s Mercy Hospital NICU.
• After orientation, attain proficiency in life‑saving procedures (intubation, umbilical lines, etc.) and credentialing at other metropolitan hospital NICUs as required.
• Participate in team activities such as the circumcision team, level 1‑2 NICU patient care, newborn nursery coverage, and neonatal follow‑up clinics.
• Engage in academic activities, including scholarly pursuits, quality improvement initiatives, faculty development, and potential academic promotion.
• Develop and implement comprehensive plans of care, including health history, physical examination, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, documentation, and collaboration with the health care team.
• Attend deliveries and lead resuscitation efforts as necessary.
• Provide high‑risk perinatal counseling to families.

Clinical Education & Consultation

• Serve as a clinical resource during teaching rounds.
• Perform consultations for inpatients as requested by specialty, medical, and surgical services.
• Provide formal and informal educational opportunities for nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.
• Act as liaison between families and staff in communicating patient status and care plans.
• Collaborate with the Division of Neonatology to develop protocols and standards of care.
• Serve as a clinical expert to community physicians and nurses.

Education, Committees & QI

• Complete mandatory education requirements (division, department, and unit specific).
• Attend and actively participate in division and committee meetings.
• Collect and analyze data for unit‑based, specialty service, and hospital QI projects.
• Identify opportunities to improve clinical practice and organizational performance.
• Participate in the development and revision of hospital/NICU standards.
• Participate on CQI project teams and complete assignments on time.
• Collaborate with medical and nursing staff in design, implementation, and evaluation of research programs and protocols.

Vaccination & Safety Requirements

All employees must receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. New employees must be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and varicella and/or have evidence of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. Immunization records will be requested. Medical or religious exemptions may be discussed with Human Resources.

Qualifications

• Board certified or eligible in pediatrics.
• Experience with Level IV NICU clinical care.
• Proficiency in life‑saving procedures.
• Strong clinical judgment and teamwork with neonatology staff.
• Interest and experience in scholarly pursuits, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
