Job Summary

The MRI Technologist I performs MRI procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards, operating MRI scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency. The role includes patient preparation, image acquisition, quality assessment, and assistance during invasive procedures while maintaining strict safety and infection control practices.

Essential Functions

  • Examine requests and verify orders for each assigned patient; refer and question orders to the radiologist before performing exams.
  • Properly identify patients using two patient identifiers and assist them while providing a brief explanation of procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient interviews for medical history, review EMR data, and record findings on requisitions.
  • Assume responsibility for the exam from initiation through completion of dictated results.
  • Prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols and record the type and amount.
  • Evaluate technical image quality and consult with a radiologist as needed.
  • Perform basic patient care functions, inform nursing staff of any changes, and assist during medical emergencies.
  • Assist physicians and PAs during invasive procedures and practice sterile technique and infection control policies.
  • Obtain medication or contrast material as directed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Practice radiation safety standards for self, employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to appropriate supervisors and clinical engineering.
  • Maintain knowledge of MRI safety requirements for staff and patients in magnetic fields.
  • Maintain a clean, stocked work area and document contrast administration.
  • Assist other medical personnel during exams involving MRI scanning.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education, Certification / License, Work Experience

  • Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency recognized by ARRT in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
  • Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry or ARMRIT program required; registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
  • CPR certification required.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Knowledge of MRI procedures, safety protocols, and imaging principles.
  • Ability to perform technical duties and interact effectively with patients and staff.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

  • Require moderate to heavy physical effort for lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies.
  • Occasional standing, walking, sitting, and bending; may involve stretching, twisting, kneeling, and being near moving equipment.
  • Exposure to hard surfaces, stairs, and moving equipment; must follow radiation safety guidelines.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Experience with MRI procedures and imaging technology.
  • Additional certifications in MRI or related imaging modalities.
